Has anyone ever seen this?
Is it possible?
Just wondering.

unless you upgrade your brakes and suspension, you will be in the same boat like the number of SUVs driving around with 22 or 24 inch rims, all looks but no gains, losses actually... 17 is as big as you should go to preserve the handling, braking and longevity of your car...

narrower tires will get you better gas mileage... smaller wheels will help only if they weigh less...

I wonder if you'd actually be able to hear the car whincing as you install the 19's ?

To each his own.

I think if you are going to corrupt the car it would be more original to make one into an off-roader...32" mud tires, 6 inch lift, skid plates, ARB front bumper with a winch, roof rack with offroad lights....can you imagine the looks on the faces of the local PCA'ers when you roll up to a meet !?!

;-]
actually, I run 18in on my car and it is just fine...l I just love the term CORRUPTION, LOL... 17in wheels were actually a factory option on later 944 (turbo mainly) and 968... Not much difference betw. 17 and 18... As long as you do not change the OVERALL diameter of the wheel/tire combo, you will be just fine... better handling, crisper turning, sharper cornering... As long as you are willing to accept harsher ride and don't drive like an idiot over speed bumps and road hazards... But on older 944s, I would not bother because the breaks are just a bit small and the suspension is not designed to take that extra stress from larger wheels and thinner tires...

I was just giving him grief !

I don't think he wants 19's for "better handling, crisper turning, and sharper cornering".

He wants to 'bling bling' it...at least that's my assumption and maybe my error.

I suppose that 19's could be the 'best' for handling, cornering, and such...I just wonder why I don't see 19" wheels on 944's that race.

My bad if they do run 19's.

I still think that the most original "custom" job you could do would be an offroad version ala the 959 Paris Dakar.

Anyone ever seen a 944 raised with offroad tires ?

It would blow the Porschefiles away !

I'd love to see one with about 12 PIAA's, a brush guard, and a safari rack !

No hard feelings, just stirring things up a bit.

LOL, it is cool... 944 would not make good off roader like the Dakkar 911s... too heavy and too delicate underneath... 911 is way better to doing this because less hardware with air cooling... 19in may be pushing it on 944 because of the weak tire choices for the overall diameter... but... nothing is impossible... I run 19s on my VR4 and ride wise with 944, there is really not that much difference... but the bling bling is there more so with 19s...

Aside from the very subjective gains in looks, are there any functional reasons why one would consider such an upgrade [or downgrade as it would seem].

Plus 19" wheels will KILL your power steering rack. You'll be spending $400+ on a new rack every other year. (Unless you spend $100 on the seal kits which you have to install yourself!)

why would this be the case? I have been running 18s for the last 6 years still with the same original power steering rack...

First of all...Porsche never offered 17" wheels for the 944...at least not that I've ever heard of. Yes, they were offered with the 968.

The deal with the steering rack is two-fold. First off, 18" tires/wheels tend to be heavier than 17" or 16", even with the same overall diameter (okay...unless you ponied up the cash for some nice forged 18" Fikses...). That increased unsprung weight adds stress to the suspension and steering components. Secondly, many people running 18" wheels end up with a larger rolling diameter. If this is combined with a lowered ride height, the geometry of the control arms and tie rods can be altered - ie. they can actually be higher at the wheel end than at the chassis end. This can also cause increased stress on these components.
