'80 Barn find 40k mile LSD time capsule rescue
With the owners permission I was able to share this with you guys. I recently came in contact with the owner of a '80 928, and have been helping him to bring it back, although not much is needed!
His grandfather bought the car off the lot in 1980, and drove it until he gave it as a wedding present to the owner's parents, and sometime around 1995 the car started to give them starting trouble.
Luckily, they put it in a Climate-controlled garage and covered it, and that is pretty much all that has happened since then.
When I uncovered this, It was like stepping into 1980. The paint, while dusty, is beautiful and original. The interior leather is beautifully soft, and the radio will do just fine with a tape and the antenna goes up when you tune it.
To top it all off, it is a rear A/C, sunroof delete 5 speed, LSD car with 47k original miles, never changed.
It's amazing what stayed on this car, the original anodized trim, all the tools, and the booklet has all of the service stamps throughout the years.
A few things puzzle me on this car- the 15" Phone dials, being it was a 5 speed, should be 16's. Unfortunately I don't have a build sheet or tags to get a better idea of options. And it's a 1980 vin so I cant run it through Porsche or 928 OC.
It fired and ran for the first time in 20 years today, a few vaccum lines here and there, some fresh gas, pump, and an injector relay, Fresh oil and some coolant, it fired right up and ran like a champ. Next step is bleeding the brakes and clutch, see if we can't drive her around the block.. Stay tuned!

It would be nice to see what goodies are still in the rear hatch area. It's like opening gifts on Christmas morning when you start looking around one of these time capsules.

Good old Guards Red!
I reset the odometer myself, and when we had it up on jack stands and was able to barely get it in gear, Odometer spun no problem.
Thank you! That very much helps. I was looking for just something like this. This still doesn't explain the 15" phone dials. I may pull one and look at the date code- may be replacements. Was halfway wondering if it was ordered with 15" for comfort or something.
Odd that it didn't show up on the option list with the LSD, I verified the case was a .05 when I was underneath.
As far as the back hatch goes, factory tire is there, as well as complete tool kit. No bulb box like mine, but A large metal jack/guard looking thing that I haven't taken a closer look at.

My '78 5 spd also came with 15" phone dials. I may had be a dealer option for buyers that wanted a "quieter/softer" ride.
Beautiful condition. The car is worth some money now! Glad to have found it now instead of just 2 years ago or so.

Thank you! He wants to keep it in the family, which I will respect. I have an '81 now, But I miss my '78. My next 928 will be a Pasha car, in a low number '78 manual. I had #621, but it was just the pinstripe interior.
