Default Anyone have a decent '78 LSD transmission for sale? while mine gets rebuilt?

The nice driving days of summer are quickly passing me by. I miss driving my car so much that I am hoping for a temporary solution to getting me back on the road at a reasonable price (That's relative I know). I will be sending my original '78 5 sp w/LSD out to Greg B at Precision to be rebuilt. I have yet to pack it in a cooler and ship it, but I realize that once I do it may be sometime before he can get it done and back to me. But I know it will be done right. I have already acquired a rebuilt Torque Tube from 928 Int.

Does anyone have an early 5 speed that works well enough for me to justify buying it and installing it until I can get my original one back from Greg B? or keep me going for a year or so?
I am not really sure how much labor removing and reinstalling a transmission might be, and so this whole idea to get me back on the road ( and not missing so many nice summer 928 events) may be to unrealistic.

I do see one on ebay that is pretty cheap but who knows how well it functions. .....boy!, I miss my ride

I think any transaxle from years up to '84 would fit? You would have a much easier time finding one.

Thanks MM, yeah, I guess i meant to say anything that will fit/work in my '78. I thought anything up to '82 will fit, if up to '84 fits all the better

Do you know if i can change the title of this thread? I am not sure how to do that if it's possible

Anything up to 86 will fit. In 86.5 they moved to a Borg Warner trans, which is still a direct swap.

Thank you for the clarification Mark.

Opinions on rebuild not withstanding, can one replace just 5th gear in these early boxes with relatively minimal labor(subsequently cost savings?) Transmission is already out of the car.

My rear pinch bolt was loose and has broken one of the 3 leafs that clasp onto the torque tube. I recently bought a rebuilt TT from you and will be doing the clutch and stub shaft as well.

To the best of my knowledge you still need to take the trans completely apart. Remember 5th gear consists of 2 matching gears. You might get the input one out but to remove the other you need to remove the counter shaft
