Was the pump assembled correctly? If so then obviously it is drawing air and a seal or pump o-ring is not doing its job. How does one connect a drill to the pump? I cannot understand why one would remove the timing belt, and some how put a drill in there where the fan blades and belts are. Most likely the pickup to block seal needs attention.

Welp, here's the latest. Still not able to get the pump to move oil correctly.

Tried multiple pumps
Tried multiple combos of seals and pumps
Resealed split case with Loctite 574 (let cure for 24 hours)
Pump bolts were torqued to 15 lbs.ft / 20 N.m every time
Gears in pump with dots facing block
Multiple combos of the OE oil pickup tube o-ring as well as the victor version
The pump when spun by drill, with the pickup tube sitting in a cup of oil picks up a little bit of oil then stops drawing, to the point where we don't even get enough volume to get oil out of the oil filter port

rack, subframe & pan are dropped, radiator and shroud are removed, for the guy who can't understand how we could possibly be spinning the pump with a drill lol and the timing belt is off because I'm not going to run / crank an engine dry and hope for oil pressure.

What if you remove or back out the pressure regulator? Could that be closed and the pump won't pressurize the air enough to open it?

Is it possible you have the wrong pump for the block? 78-79 are different than 80-95

Dan when was the last time that the engine was running?
what happend since the last engine running event and the oil wont prime?
NOTE the oil pump spins CW while facing the engine.
NOTE posting pictures will increase the chance of a correct diagnosis

I actually have never seen it running (in full trim anyway), I came into the project in the middle kind of. I was the one who rebuilt the motor however and have test started it and ran it for a min before becoming suspect of no oil pressure (nothing reading on the dash) which essentially started me down this rabbit hole.

and yep I'm aware of the pumps rotational direction
and not sure what a picture will show that all of the descriptions and posts I've made to this point would help clarify, It's a bare motor up front with the timing belt off and the pump being spun by a drill at roughly 1800 rpm, reading pressure through a mechanical gauge in place of the sending unit and have even had the filter off with the car up on the rack standing under it with the pan off and the pickup submerged in oil and my assistant standing under the filter port with an empty cup waiting for oil to go through the system but to no avail.

I know your frustrated.......

well call me crazy but a picture could be worth a thousand words,
lets just say for example you have clocked the pump wrong,
and for some reason you keep repeating this..............
it will never pump oil.
So yes please post pictures of what your working on,
it makes it easier to give best guesses
