Endurance 928
Hello all! Thanks for having me.. I read all 5! intro pages.. ( I didn't memorize them, just read them..) Anyway- Seriously considering doing a WRL ( World Racing League ) 928.. No, I don't expect to win, but amateur endurance racing calls- I wish to do it in something cool, different, reasonably fast, and because I want to... First off, I haven't seen any 928's in WRL... I'm considering an early 80's 2 valve, manual... Think of it as stripped roller with a cage, fire system, and basic lights.. WRL uses a lbs/hp rating system, so I'd be shooting for 270-300 whp in a 2900-3100 lb with driver. There's lots of LS powered junkyard stuff racing, and that would be considered, but the original "all aluminum" 928 that ran the Daytona 24 hour just screams "COOL!" I've been vintage racing for over 20 years, and still love it, it's just that $10 a gallon race gas ( 60 gal ) $1200 tires ( 2 sets) and less than 1.5 hours track time has made me look elsewhere. I understand what's required to race. It seems to me that 90% of the 928's glitches are electrical and "street car" issues (windows, switches, etc.) Again, thorough, basic, good prep and quality parts should go a long way; and it's an adventure... Advice? Thanks! Ken

its a shame Kibort isn't on the forum to offer up his opinion but you might try reaching out to him on the racing forum.
Several here have raced 928's on various levels so you should be able to gather lots of info

OK, I've seen several track pics and avatars of race 928's, and I was hoping for several of these people to chime in and offer their insights and suggestions... There's lots of ways to skin a cat-- stock Porsche V8 and transaxle, maybe with MegaSquirt? an LS (gasp!).... an LS and regular transmission AND a third member?!?! I've seen lots of variations, but I'd love to hear from each to discuss the Pro's and Con's.. Mark Kibort responded through the 'Racing" section, but It would be great to not have to jump back and forth to gather different ideas. Lots of people are on here ALL the time, and threads drop off quick. This isn't a self bump- maybe just asking for some self-help? I don't want to start posting pics of what I might buy and what my plans are to get dog-piled with "why didn't you talk to so and so?!?!" C'mon guys, it's the internet- it's free info- give freely? I'm asking nice... Thanks! Ken

You might also want to contact "iceman" as he did several Lemons races with his 928. If you are not familiar with that series it is an endurance race with very inexpensive cars and few mods.

Endurance racing a 928........................BTDT in lemons!!!! Both Marks even drove for me! The car I built still races in lemons 8 years later on the "other" coast!
The biggest issues are:
Oiling....by far number one, don't listen to Kibort about it...the stock S4 oiling system DOES NOT WORK ON TRACK...many have tried and everyone blows engines unless they have a dry sump or accusump. Dry sump is pricey but by far the best answer, since it solves a couple oil issues....starvation in corners and the heads filling up with oil, causing starvation (however 16V seems better at this vs 32V) I also think keeping RPM moderate helps (I never went over 6000)
Transmisson: A proper oil cooler is required if you want the 5 speed to last. A dual disc clutch or stronger single disk is required too. Its not a bad idea to have cyro treated gears and a spraying cooler like the car above has too. I do think the automatic is far stronger and cheaper to run since thats what I ran in lemons with just a large cooler in front of radiator
I wrote a thread a while back about building 928 race cars....lots of good info in there
