It also looks like your **** that is split out up the shaft is fit over some kind of aftermarket shift stick. If so it might be that the shift stick has a larger girth than the original and is over-stretching the rubber of the shift ****. If that is the case any replacement **** is going to be overstressed in the same way.

It is often called a stick shift, but that usually refers to the type of transmission. The item that is used to change the gears in a stick shift transmission would logically be called the shift stick.
