Default Waking up a 17 year dormant 1984 928S

First off, thank you for the help so far. This is such a great community I have found here to help me get this car back on the road.

Rather than one off post so I thought it might be easier to just create one thread of trying to get this car sorted out.

I've gone ahead and done the one thing you should never do which is to buy a nonrunning 928. I had an S4 many years ago and never really got the itch out of my system, and was looking for one I could nursed back to health.

As of right now the fuel Motor and pump or out to be replaced, what came out of the fuel pump was nasty beyond believe.

Putting a new pump and filter on will probably be will probably be the easiest part of this whole thing.

As it stands right now I don't have spark, and I don't believe I have a cooling system.

Spark - I did some quick checking in I've got power to the coil and the coil checks out, but using a spark plug tester I don't have spark on number one at least. The distributor cap and rotor are old, but not in that bad shape and the router is spinning. Time to start walking through the checklist on that.

Cooling - I drain the radiator in plain water came out, hopefully it was distilled water that was put in but obviously that's likely not super awesome. I want to refill the system and I heard dripping from underneath the car when I started to put the correct coolant in, so it looks like I have a hole or crack in my coolant filter tank.

Here's the car as I pulled it out of the yard ( because I know I'll get what for if I don't post that pictures of her quickly ).

Just reconnected the fuel pump and filter.

Not getting power to the pump, have a new relay on order. Need to finish tightening everything down here.

Jumpered 30 and 87 nothing until the second try, think I am going to have to assume all the electrical connections are needing to be cleaned until proven otherwise. I have power to the pump now so on the the spark issue.

Question - been using the SharkSkin testing procedures that GT6ixer was kind enough to provide (thanks!) and found what appears to be a gap in the testing.

This is under Test 6, below checking the voltage from the + coil terminal to ground.

In the test in the picture below it doesn't indicate how many volts I should have when I put the meter on the spots shown. I current have zero there with the ignition yet on and with the ignition key off. How many volts should I see there? At least 3 like in the immediately above test?

Thanks!

Update - figured out that appears to be hot from the batter/starter? Pulled it apart and cleaned it all up. I have 12v there now.

I think the text should say "Battery voltage while performing test BELOW must be minimum 11V."

951 Club sport wheels and H4 lights. Whoever had this car really spent some money to upgrade those parts. Awesome revival, will subscribe!

Looks like you are making good progress. And hey never say never. Though your '84 has sat longer, 17 vs 10 years, you at least got to see yours before buying. I got mine sight unseen last June. As of last month it is running and runs really good. So all's well that ends well. You'll no doubt get there.

Here is some good advice I followed from Hilton (post #14)

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ml#post8556884

Also with a car that old you'll definitely want to replace all rubber flammable fluid carrying lines, i.e. fuel and power steering.

Good luck. I look forward to following along.

Thanks gentlemen, appreciate the support.

Apparently she has an uprated front sway bar and adjustable shocks too.

You are a brave man GT6ixer!

On to trouble shooting the ICU voltage.

Well, hard to troubleshoot something you can't find. I don't seem to have a matching ICU to what is in the Sharkskin guide.

This isn't it, cover off and needing cleaning.

So close - she briefly stumbled to life! Neighbors where probably wondering why I was standing there with my arms up the air and dumb grin on my face (that might be too much information).

She won't stay running however, she starts and idles roughly for about 10 seconds then dies.

Found a disconnected vacuun line to the distributor.

Anyone know off hand where this attaches?

OK, did some searching and it looks like that is my vacuum advance line that goes to the back of the throttle body? I'm assuming that means pulling the air intake assembly off so I can get access? Is there a reference picture handy of where that attaches on the throttlebody? I did some quick poking around and jump out at me.

Goes to a Y-connector at the back of the throttle body.

Here is a video I made documenting the routing of all those thin vacuum lines on my '84. The distributer vac line is at the 3:35 mark.

I suggest you take videos of anything you take off that has a complicated routing. Much easier to remember where stuff goes than just pictures. Wish I would have done that. I made that video after the fact.
