Default Drip Rails Bent, hold shop to it?

My shop says I need two new drip rails up top..theyre bent.

Well, they are not, they were not bent ON the car...

This a common issue coming apart, or should I work on holding them to it.

The shop bent them during removal, and they weren't bent before.

Damn right, make them pay for replacement. WTF!

If they are properly attached, they are difficult to remove without damage. I would not expect them to survive, unless they were lose to begin with.

^^^^

They are somewhere between a major pain and impossible to remove without some damage. I can usually get them off with a lot of patience and some gentle persuasion, but... It's 30+ year old glue and crud holding them on. The glue was finally fully cured just a couple weeks ago now.

-- Consider the good-will value of these parts. They aren't expensive in the giant scheme of things, but you have probably 10x the parts cost in good-guy points to bargain with on something else. Let them know that they were damaged on removal but you can find the replacements. See what they say.

On early cars (don't know when it stopped) the drip rails have a small philips head screw holding them on, along the rear surface of the A-pillar, maybe 8 inches up from the cowl. Later cars do not have the screws, so I know about the screw on early cars only after bending an early drip rail.

Curious, why would someone try to remove these, were they doing paintwork?

Ya know, when you take your vehicle to any shop, they'll usually tell ya that certain parts are expendable, they be ruined or damaged and need to be replaced. That's understandable, when they're up front about it.

A couple of years ago at Sharktoberfest, I had my windshield replaced. The man told me up front that the side trim pieces would probably get bent during removal, and that Mark had new replacement pieces. New were under 70 bucks. Glade I had the windshield done at Mark's, cause the parts were right there, at a fantastic price for everything.

Sounds to me like the shop you're using has never done this type of work in the past. To bad, they're on the hook. Make them replace the parts they bent.

You will buy the parts either way. Turn it into a pissing contest and the cost of work and extras will start going up. If the part is cheap and not unattainable chalk it up to doing business.

For this reason, and nosnow's comment below is why I would let it go, buy the parts & drop them off.

^^ What Hacker said. You now have the opportunity to establish yourself as the good/reasonable guy, which should establish a positive and cooperative atmosphere going forward; but also allow you to clearly set the rule that if they foresee or experience any further difficulty or issue, they communicate that prior to, or at the time of, and not after the event.

I recommend you have Amber Gramps call the shop on your behalf.
