Noisy clutch was NOT the release bearing in my '78

After reading this. I feel both blessed and lucky to have a smooth clutch in my 79. I did this job four times total with two different clutch sets. It's heavy, awkward and seems to have a mind of its own. The optimoly made a huge difference on the last two. My last clutch job was only an r and r due to rear main.

At least, as long as the short shaft isn't stuck into the pilot bearing. That makes life a bit more challenging: https://members.rennlist.com/jeifert/DD-CLUTCH-REP.html
Since the actual "removal" part doesn't require pulling the motor or dropping the trans (unlike every other car I've worked on), it goes a lot faster and easier.
Since the WSM covers it in pretty good detail, the pitfalls are far less. Greg says he's found a few things that improve his success rate, and I don't doubt that.
Although I had no problems the one time I did it (100% success, but a sample size of one - not really valid statistically).

My '78 on cold start up will grind going into first or reverse and doesn't want to go into any other gears. My solution has been to let the car idle for about 5 minutes at cold start up and then go into 4th and fifth gear then ease her into first or reverse without grinding. When starting again after driving I am able to ease into reverse or first again without incident not having to let idle for more than2-3 seconds. Upon cold starts maybe an issue of engine spinning faster than trans shafts?

Fix the clutch release problem.
BTW....I do not agree that going to a single disc clutch is the answer.....at this time.
1. Correctly done, a dual disc clutch SHOULD work perfectly for another 80,000 miles without touching it.
2. There's simply not enough stock late pieces on the planet for very many people to do swap over to single disc clutches, using original parts.
