ICV question
I had my car at the local wrench shop to install a new ICV for a persistent high idle of 1000 rpms on my 1986.5. Today he called to say it's ready, but mentioned they did it without removing the intake???
Is that even possible? I have not driven the car; he reported that is much better but apparently every now and then when placed on neutral, might idle high for a couple of seconds and go back to "normal" ( I need to find out what normal would be).
Am I missing something here??
Thank you

Depends what he means by not removing intake...I have done ICV and yes I remove intake side plenums and center stack but maybe they are referring to the intake runners bolted to the car?

On the 'pipe organ' S3 you can R&R the ISV without removing all of the the intake. With the airbox and MAS out of the way you can pretty-much get to it.
Randomly-fluctuating idle likely means that the LH is getting fluctuating temp signal from the TEMP-II sender. Bad sender less likely than poor, frayed, or high-resistance wiring.
*Likely*; Other causes possible.

I re-read the OP. You should check the signal from the idle switch at the LH ecu pins. Directions are in the LH/EZF troubleshooting guide on the Moorehouse CDs.

Idle bypass screw is pretty important in these cars...and it's sensitive...the high idle in neutral could be helped by an adjustment; I have had similar issues on my car and was able to address in that way. Track carefully the positioning and I'd go for 1/8th turns then drive the car...
Question..when the car is started...does it settle to idle well or does it go up and then plunge / nearly die?

I drove it today, and it ended up staying at the shop. Started at approximately 800 rpm, if you revved up on neutral, it will blip up to 1200 for 1-2 seconds and then went down to 800. After warm, it stayed even higher I brought it in with (1200 rpms). Seems the just took the airbox and MAF for the ICV. They will need to work further on it. Definitely they say they replaced the ICV. More updates as they come.
