Default Key Problem!

Recently purchased car. It came with only one key. I went to the local locksmith and he said that he couldn't cut the key and to go to the dealership. I went to the dealership...they do not cut keys. Took the vin number and my ID. Key came back to me.........NO FIT!! The ignition, locks must have changed sometime?. Where do I go from here? I would love to have a spare set of keys without the cost of a whole new Lock/Ignition. Please Advise

There are locksmiths out there that can cut Porsche keys but they are few and far between. Best to try calling around.

Hi Matt,

Tony Euganeo at Locksmith Service cuts 928 keys if you provide him with an original. His number is: 610.461.0519

That is a note that I saved from an earlier post.

IIRC, he does excellent work with quick turn around. You can next day mail the key, pay for same from him, plus the cut,… back in business in a few days,… been a while.

Why don’t ya’ give him a call, and let us know what happens?

928 International can copy your key, and you can send out the key with enough insurnace on it such that if it's lost you can rekey the car. Turnaound, I'm told, is quick.

I am in a similar situation but I thought it might be interesting to duplicate the key myself. I have purchased a couple of blanks off of ebay and am now working on a way to copy the key. I think it can be done on a regular duplicator with an adapter that allows the key to sit 3-4mm closer to the cutting wheel. This would present the key to the wheel at an angle (determined by the distance the key is extended.) Might work.

I bought some blanks on eBay and took them to a locksmith recommended by a nearby Porsche parts place. The locksmith had to try the copy then go back inside to file on it a few times before it worked. I've heard of quite a few owners who had keys made from the VIN that didn't work.

I tried getting a key from Porsche by the VIN and it wasn't even close. Luckily a local shop cut a new key. It took about 20 minutes (they were busy) and he tried it a few times until it worked perfectly. Don't wait until it breaks off in the door (like mine did) before you get a copy. I'd call the larger locksmiths in your local area.

the keys are cut on a standard key tracing machine with two adapters which hold the keys at the correct angle .....no laser , no magic just a $150 adapter to a normal key machine . PCNA who does the key by vin# codes for 1980-95 USA cars only as I recall ....for the last 2-3 years have had a very hard time making good keys . Often the two side will not even look the same ...which they must . when the key does not work the usual response is "then your car must have been rekeyed" when you consider that a full lock set keyed the same can cost about $2,000 how many cars do you think get new locks !

Hey Matt,

Ya' gotta' love anything that Jim can do at 928 Intl! He and those guys have helped me out without any mistakes. That is about 8 years now. See if he can cut a replacement key upon receipt of yours within 24 hours.

Matt,

I had the same problem when I first got my car. I got the keys from Porsche and none of the locks or ignition worked.

So I got a wire brush attachment for my drill and smoothened the edges of the new keys and squirted WD-40 into the locks. After frequently checking if I'd done enough buffing, the keys worked. They work fine now in every lock and the ignition - good as new!

I bought a blank awhile back and finally found a locksmith who'd do it, but he wanted $85 to cut it and needed the car for about 4 hrs to make sure it would work. He said it involved a lot of cutting and trying it in the locks. Luckily the PO found his spare key and I didn't need to do the locksmith thing.

Default Good 928 key cut in Canada

For anyone in Canada or the Pacific North West, there is a very good locksmith in Vancouver BC called "Pacific Lock and Safe" (604-?? I will insert the # when I get home) that has been cutting 928 keys for years. In their yellow page ad they even advertise 928 key cutting. The locksmith (sorry can't remember his name) is a very nice guy, and very knowledgeable about the 928. I have had him cut keys for 2 of my 928's.

I just had 2 of my ebay keys cut there last week and they were fab. The locksmith would rather have the car present to check the key, but will ship a copied key nonetheless.

I was charged $25.00 cad (19usd) per key. He also has plenty of blanks for sale as well. I think he charges about $20 a blank. So if you need a copy, send your insured key and get it back with clones in a week. Peace of mind IS sometimes cheap!

BTW, apparently there are some 928 blanks out there that are not easily cut (I think because they are steal), and most locksmiths will not touch these keys. I got my keys on ebay from a place in Australia for $5.99 each and they were fine, in fact the same key the Pacific Lock offered.

I live in Toronto in central Canada and I have looked for a locksmith capable of copying 928 key for a while, and I have found no one! There was a couple who talked the talk but were a total waste of time!

There is defiantly poor key cuts out there, however I must disagree. We are not always talking about new locksets. Both of my 928's have had different lock cylinders. My current S4 had 3, and I have since had all my locks re-keyed to a different key all together. I have often seen dismantlers selling "complete" 928 locksets for well under $300. Personally I would think twice about ordering a VIN key on a 10-20 year old car of which I don't know the exact maint/service history.
