From what I've gathered, which includes my 81 which I know rather well, the competition package was cosmetic, at least for 81. Some claim the 82's had other upgrades but to be honest I'm skeptical about that.
My 81 has the same engine, transmission & brakes as any other 81. No limited slip, this is a common assumption that was included with the Comp package but others have posted up Comp cars showing 220 on the option list (not on mine). My car does have the sports suspension, but that was an option on any car so not unique to the Comp package.
What the Comp package did include based on my car: 911S Sport Seats, 3-spoke S steering wheel, spoilers (with brake ducts), and manhole cover wheels.
The difficulty is narrowing this down to facts is cars upgraded over the years. Take my 81 if nobody knew me and I just resold it. I upgraded it to S brakes 15 years ago so unless I noted that somewhere in the records, it could lead someone to believe it came that way.

Thanks Chris. They cleaned up very nicely. I think that I have sufficiently removed some of the "patina". There is a flaw in the left shoulder of the driver seat but that does not bother me yet.
I jacked her up for the first time this weekend with the expectation of lubing up the grub screw to re align the shift orientation. It currently leans left and reverse and first are a very deliberate effort.
I completely forgot about all of the crap that you have to remove to access the shift linkage. My 79 has been torn down for so long that I just took for granted it would be quick and easy, lol. After discovering the four bolts that connect the cat with the rear exhaust pipe were seized and would be a process all by itself, I just took here down to all fours and went for a drive.
Driving is much more fun than wrenching. My ratio's got off several years ago and I have a lot of driving left to do for them to get back in balance.
New tires are ordered and I have no projects scheduled.

How do those early sport seats compare vs. early comfort vs. later comfort seats? In terms of lateral support and multihour highway driving comfort? I love the look of the early sport seats.

Sorry Ronn- this weekend is our daughters graduation from ETSU. Post graduate in speech/language pathology. We would not miss that for anything. They could be giving cars away in Atlanta that weekend and I would still have to miss it.
I am sure that I will see you around soon.

I have not taken any extended drives yet so I won;t know about multi hour
driving until next month.
I know you did not ask but they do feel more comforting than the later sport seats. They have more horizontal padding on the sides than the later sport seats. I think I like the appearance and performance of the later version of the sport seats but these things sure are comfortable.

The things that do change over time are focus, budget, other interests and obligations, time, space, etc.
I am sure by the end of this year I will be resurrecting the 79 rehab thread asking for advice on this that or the other. For now.......
