Question Just got my first 928s

Hello!
This is my first post so I apologize in advance if I'm in the wrong place.

I just recently traded one of my other project cars for a 1984 928s.
It has an unknown amount of miles on it because the odometer is broken but I know it has over 160k.
The guy I got it from had shipped it to California (where I live) from Wisconsin where it was originally purchased.
All I know about it thus far is it runs and drives fine and it has good compression on all cylinders, although shifting to 2nd is a little bit rough and it leaks a little bit of oil and a lot of power steering fluid.

My question is what should I check first? I've got plenty of experience working on old cars but I'm not so good with fuel injection and I've never messed with anything that had overhead cams (other than Hondas when I was younger).

I'm pretty sure the rack and pinion needs to be replaced or rebuilt and that's no problem for me, the oil leak seems to be somewhere near the top of the block under the intake runners so I'm assuming it's a valve cover gasket which shouldn't be a problem either.

I've already changed the oil, flushed the coolant and ordered a new catalytic converter for it because I can tell from the exhaust smell that it's not going to pass smog.

Anything additional wisdom you gentlemen/ladies can lay on me?

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I'll go through this.
I should also mention that I've downloaded the shop manual (big shout out to ligeti.com) and I'm currently in the process of printing it out and putting it in binders.
I'll post pics soon.
Thanks again!

Sorry, how silly of me.
These are the only pics I have with me at the moment, I'll take more when I get home from work.

Here's a question for you guys: Considering the car I traded for this thing only cost me $3200 do you think I got a decent deal?

Nice car and congratulations! The 1984 is regarded by many to be the best year of the 928. When I say many I mean me. But seriously all years are cool.

Do a search for "Intake Refresh" here. You'll want to perform some if not all of those things. Definitely replace all the rubber fuel and PS lines. My car's injector lines were so dry I was able to snap them in half like a pretzel. Too many unfortunate fire stories on the cars due to old rubber.

Sounds like you are comfortable digging in. You definitely came to the right place. The folks here are incredibly helpful. Even Randy.

Well I do. Considering I bought my car for $4500 and it was a non runner.

I will definitely do that, I already noticed that a few of the vacuum lines are pretty brittle.

And thanks for that vote of confidence in my car trading acumen. I've been having trouble convincing my wife that I'm not a madman for trading a 2001 Toyota MR2 for what she considers to be a leaking, unregisterable (for the time being) German monstrosity from the 1980s.

Yes, but it is an AWESOME German monstrosity from the 1980's.

An MR2 is a wicked little car. A sorted 928 will thrill you in ways an MR2 can't conceive.

Jump in and DO IT!
