928 RS... what if ?
Greetings,
After checking out the post on sealing up the sunroof on a 928 and gutting the interior, I got to thinking (scary thought...). What might an RS version of our cars have been like ?
I'm thinking it would have had the items from the Club Sport model (no sunroof, forged CS wheels, etc.) and maybe a minimalist (but not trashed) interior. How about no rear quarter panels, no rear seats or rear center console and have that area just covered in nice standard black carpet.
No audio system of any kind or complicated HVAC system. Just a basic (but well running) ventilation and heating system. No power windows, door locking systems or power seats, but with all of the really cool go-fast items.
Not only would it be a blast to drive, but I think it would be a much easier car to work on as well.
Your thoughts ?
Rob

I really think that the 928 should have been offered in two trim modles starting in 1980.
One is the 928 that really existed. Every luxery item that you can think of, and then some.
The other, soemthing of a striped down car. Mannual locks, windows, "sport" seats, no sun roof, minimal rear interor, no or minimal vacuum on the HVAC, minimal stero, the biggest brakes standard, 5 speed standard, and the highest tune the engine could be made to support, and a higher rear end. Basicly, a lighter, faster, more powerful, cheaper 928. (What the 930 was in real life.)
The result, if I'm thinking correctly, would be at least a 260 hp US 928S in 1980, with a 300hp euro 928S, made at the same time as the 220 hp cars. When the S4 is introduced, it's introduced with the sport GT along side, instead of waighting a few years.
More fun to dive on a twisty road, a bit lower maintance, and cheaper to buy. Sounds like fun no?

Yeah...
I keep thinking over and over, how nice it would be to completely
rip out all the excess crap on the 928, and redo it in a more minimalist way.
I already have CIS, so I do not have tons of engine electrical.
I just get annoyed with the constant electrical gremlins.
There are tons of street rods out there, with minimal wiring,
but it covers all the basics...
I envy the track cars I see, with none of the extra junk,
and completely independent engine management systems...

Hi Rob -
As you know, my car is fairly close to what you described. No quarter panels, no rear console, no rear seats, no door panels, no A/C, no radio, no power seats. I do still have a functioning power sunroof though. It's definitely a blast to drive and I don't have to worry about many of the typical 928 quirks.
Unfortunately, the market for this type of car is extremely limited. If folks were going to drop $80k (in late 80's money) or $120k today, they expect the car to do all things well. The performance envelope has to be large enough where the car will kick *** when you want it to, but also comfortable & quiet when you're just cruising about. A 928RS would be in ***-kicking mode at all times.
It's similar to the regular 996TT and 996GT2 of today. The TT has wide appeal, while you can buy a GT2 for several thousand dollars below INVOICE. If Porsche sold a few hundred 928's per year, they would have sold maybe a dozen of these RS versions. But I'd definitely would love to have seen one.

Dennis,
You know, I have never seen the interior of your car. I really am thinking of going that route. 2 of my speakers are blown and with the rollbar in now I can't use the seats anyway.
I'd like to really clean out the rear section and then shoot a really good layer of undercoating (black) over everything. Possibly get a new carpet kit and then new seats or have the old ones recovered.

thats why you would have two, an auto with leather interior to comute and something stripped out for the weekends. im not sure youd hear the road noise over the engine- with headers and a good exhaust!

Seth,
Tell you what. Since I really think that you should not have to put up with the burden of all of that road noise, I will trade you cars. You can have both of my cars for your GT. I am only thinking of your welfare...
