Default A wee story with pics of last weekend away in my '79

After a week of hunting Red Deer during the Stag "rut" in our Southern Fiordland Mountains, I was home on Friday with a mere 2 hours to unpack before jumping into the old girl and beginning the 2.5hr drive up to Cromwell, Central Otago NZ, where the Highlands Motorsport Park "Festival of Speed" was to commence, I had been accepted to show my car in the "Classics" amongst many others over the two days of racing.

I had the only 928 in the show.

I had taken our Caravan up there two weeks earlier with our tow vehicle.

To add to the excitement, it was my birthday on the Saturday, so my Parents (who live up there) some friends, and of course my darling Tanz, we're going to be with me to share the weekend, Tanz would follow me up later in her car after work.

Anyway, I had my flask of coffee, music, and my grin all good to go, turned the key, and as per usual, fired right up, ahhh the serenity of that sound...

I took the "back" road up through Middlemarch (yes I know you won't have a clue where that is, but the internet is a wonderful thing) I prefer to travel this road as it is a great driving road with good seal and tight nicely cambered turns, along with the odd 2-3 kilometre straight that I can give her a wee squirt on, (I know, pathetic to you USA guys, but long for us here in Otago NZ), she hit her "max speed" as stated in my original owners manual, before I ran out of room, she had more... this, from a 38+ year old engine with 146k miles that has never left the chassis for a rebuild, brilliant, more grinning...

I must admit that when passing another car, I kill the volume on the stereo, even though, the old girl is an auto, the sound when planting the right foot whilst simultaneously "shifting" the lever back to 2nd is just beautiful, from a burbling drone, to a wailing banshee in the flicker of an ear hair, the diminishing grille in the rear view, the only reminder that I really ought to lift...the right foot.

I can only imagine what you 4.7 and larger guys must feel, awesome!!!

Apart from the usual head turners, or passed cars flying up behind me for a better look, the trip was otherwise sensational

Below is a small montage of pictures from the weekend.

Blast it, was supposed to sort title before posting, it's not my last weekend with '79, rather the weekend I just had...ah still does not sound right!

Cheers,

Kiwi

On my way

Another straight bit...

Front and back, so busy, this Road...

If ya got Pascha, you will understand...

Life is good for this old girl (100kph speed limit over here)

Arrived!!! Time for a beer.

Sat morning, early set up, polish/remove bugs off from yesterday's drive!!!

The neighbours have arrived.

Day Two and a new neighbour.

I look forward to this angle sans spoiler and Teledials... one day.

Hmmmm

Luuuvvvly

Immaculate

On my way to introduce myself to Myles, yes he lives in Paradise.

Heading back home late Sunday afternoon, Omakau country.

20 minutes from home, time to flick on the H4's.Only difference to car was a slight increase in temp, gauge raised around 2,needle widths toward end of trip and stayed there. Ambient outside temp was approximately 7degC colder?

Rise in temp sounds like ground problem (mine does this also with lights) Looks like you had a very good trip through some great country and no problems.....just can't ask for much more.

Kiwi'79,
was great to finally meet you (and your car) on Sunday.
You have a stunning looking OB with just enough niggles to keep you away from that motorbike......

Glad you enjoyed your trip back. I too like the Middlemarch road, lots of variety and little traffic.

I look forward to catching up with you again. Maybe next time my car will be in a state where we can compare them on the road (one at a time of course - road racing is not advisable).

Myles

Hmmmm, I will check those grounds again, was not overly concerning, just notable due to its mostly stationary position, having said that, it does rise slightly with a spirited push up a hill, cheers joejoe.

Yes, likewise Myles, great to meet you, and look forward to a drive in that beast of a car!!! (Yes, racing best kept on the track, maybe you could arrange this for us at your local race-track, Mr Quinn has a penchant for a Porsche)

Looks like the land of the long white cloud had good weather that weekend. Perfect for your excellent looking machine.

Yes G.P, the seasons are all up the wop, beautiful here, but serious flooding in the North Island, thanks for your comments.

Kiwi,
This was so much fun to read and to enjoy the photographs.
Brilliant !
Thank you for taking the time to document this.
Maybe you could start a recurring series of NZ road adventures with your trusty 928 ?

Thanks Dan, funny you should mention that, as that is exactly what I intend to do!!! Will try and keep them short and sweet.
Autumn here now, so I will pick my drives carefully.

Furthermore I was given the latest GoPro for my birthday, so when I work out how to work the thing, I will post some short footage as well.
Cheers

Thanks Steve for the pics. Your roads are the best I have ever been on, even driving a 5cyl TDI VW camper van. Wonderful country, great people, good food, even better beer. Perfect 928 country.
