Yes, we believe that only the speedometer was replaced when the car was imported into the U.S. and federalized. Although I would have preferred that they left everything alone, a MPH speedometer is probably the only modification that I'm fine with, considering where I live.

Hey, can you find a few H4 headlights and a Blaupunkt Bamberg radio for me over there?

You might toss a couple spare relays in there too.

Although the 78 isn't quite as dependent on them as later years, it certainly can't hurt (you can also 'cannibalize' the horn relay if needed).

Other than a non-functioning cruise control and some minor issues with the lights, she ran like a champ! Success!

Finally took a photo that I think is good enough to use as my new avie.
The car look presentable when it's cleaned up!

So I got her out of storage this weekend to look it over a bit. One of the first things that happened was that I noticed the driver's exterior door handle started feeling a little odd when using it. Ut oh... I know that feeling (but never with a Porsche)! Sure enough, about 3-4 pulls later, it stopped functioning. Luckily, the inner door handle still works.

I pulled the door panel (and I need some work there... the fiberboard is deteriorating after 40 years) and realized that I didn't want to tie into this job that late in the day, and on a holiday weekend. So that's a project for later, and one that will absolutely drive me crazy thinking about it! I like things to work, and an exterior door handle is kinda the first impression you have of a car's functionality. Luckily, there seems to be threads on this repair.

Since I was in the 928 mood, when I got back home, I pulled out a spare pod that I'd like to have restored. The top surface is a little brittle in spots, with the typical crack running down the center. I also have a chunk out of the flaired opening surrounding the ignition hole.
I've read several threads on repairing pods, and I'm not doing to do the plastic cover. I'd prefer to keep it looking original, and with any bondo/fill/paint process, you lose that texture. Leather looks nice, but it was never offered on this car. Not quite sure what route this little part of the project will take.

Oh, and I did get an exhaust for the car, and it's from an '83 and stainless. I'll post photos once it's delivered, along with the hanger modification needed to fit on the '78.

A Blaupunkt radio is also on its way to me, although it's the consumer model, not the Porsche branded one. Same radio, though, and with the install kit I got from Roger, it should fit & look great! It should also eliminate an issue I have with electrical drain that I've linked to the aftermarket radio currently in the car.

Awesome. Looks great. The radio will really complement the interior look. I used an auxiliary cable with mine and it works great if you radio has a working amp.

For the door panels, I have had good luck using marine epoxy to strengthen the fiberboard. Also, be sure you replace the water barrier to keep it from getting wet.

Porsche Contact Center in Atlanta reviewed the kardex and build sheet on my car & confirms there is no reference to an optional passenger side mirror. That leads me to believe that it was added later by the owner, or when the car was federalized, along with the rear override bumpers & U.S. spec headlights. At least they didn't add the goofy camper-light front markers.

I'm leaning towards permanently removing the mirror when the car goes for repaint. Although that would make driving slightly more inconvenient, I kinda like the look of the early cars with just one mirror. Besides making it more unique, it enhances the early look, IMHO.

Also, just got a bit of bad news: 924Werks was planning on having the black/brown pasha fabric reproduced this year, but the story that I was told is that after rejecting one batch or sample, this looks like it won't be a reality until next year.

Some 928s were fitted with leather covered pods but few as it was an expensive option. The last GTS for the USA market had leather covered EVERTHING

IIRC you mentioned your having the car painted. Best to do the interior after paint/mechanicals and maybe the blk/br will be available then. If not Rob Budd had the blk/tan in stock last time I checked. T

stock exhaust system arrived today:

It will be a few weeks before I can get it on, but in the meanwhile I'll clean it up and add some satin black paint.

I'm not sure if I'll be using the U.S. catalytic converter.

I agree Tony. Nothing worse that overspray on a new interior.
There was mention of attempts to dye the tan to a darker brown, or use the white/black and try the same with that. Has anyone attempted this? I'm curious to know how it turned out. Maybe an experiment is in order.
