Deep cleaning isn't an option here. Maybe the seat backs of the front seats can be saved, but everything else needs replaced, including the foam. Rear seats are "crunchy" and the fabric is ripping as you put pressure on them.

It doesn't look that bad in the photos, but yeah... they are toast.

The headliner is good, although I think it will need a little reforming in the rear where it matches up with the hatch. The inner quarter trim pieces aren't bad, but one side has a little more "pull" away from the window. Nothing horribly bad, though.

I need to find a good upholstery shop to see if the material can be matched. The passenger door panel looks good; the driver's side not quite as nice.

Carpet is horrible. I've been through that before. I'd like to get that headlight adjuster working again, though. What was the button/**** that is in front of it?

I've seen some center vents with a little **** on the left side, and some blank like this one. What's the difference? Is it AC?

Also, looks like I'm missing the ***** on the HVAC unit. Are those easily found & replaced?

The Alpine cassette deck... well, yeah. It's vintage, and I'm not so sure it works. AM came in, but nothing on the FM. I'm sure that is an antenna issue. Who knows if the cassette works.

The bottom right **** - I have no idea what's going on there. Maybe an aftermarket alarm?

Oh, and while I'm on the center console, I noticed that the right side panel with the carpet was broken. I'll have to find a replacement when I do the carpet.

Shift boot is detached and needs reattached. Surprisingly, it's not too bad.

The dash... ugh!
I'd rather not cover it in leather, but unless a nice brown one pops up, I don't have a lot of options. The pod is the same. I have a spare, but it also has a split down the center.

It's a 10 footer. Maybe even a 6 footer. Wrong shade of brown, but it's not a horribly bad paint job. But it's weathered and will need to be repainted. One thing I noticed when looking in the door jams and under the hood; the original mocha brown is a very flat color (meaning no metal flake). IMHO, it looks like an older color, since all the new colors you see have metallic in them.

Engine compartment looks decent. I think it will clean up very nicely.

I think this is a late '78, correct?

What was the significance of this number on the tape, on the bottom of the glove box door?

The early pumpkins were made of mild steel. Try and find IIRC an 80-83 single inlet, dual outlet stainless steel pumpkin. Screen shot below courtesy of 928 Owners Club VIN lookup. You can find some inexpensive plastic type plugs from your local hardware to fill the spoiler holes...at least until you have car painted. Would highly recommend having RL'r "Kiln_Red" paint your car. He knows these 928's and does excellent work at a very fair price. You can save some $$ if you do partial disassembly/reassembly. If having seats reupholstered you should also add new vinyl to the seat backs...they are also 39+ years old. T

Hvac sliders are still available new from Porsche. Call Roger at 928s R Us

78 had no **** next to vent so that's correct for your year.

that's a true production number on the masking tape under the glove box. Very cool!!

Oh and the bottom right should be the large fasten seat belt light.

Lots of character and charm inside! Best of luck !!

Balance control **** is in front of the light leveler - the components and ****/rosette is still available from porsche. The Brown/black pasha is NLA, may be able to dye white black to look correct. Could also go Brown vinyl bolsters with Black/tan, but loses some character doing that.

The Earlier cars had no **** in center vent. Your steering wheel cover is also gone, Rob Budd can recover it in the proper leather. I'm working on getting a 928 dash repro from 924werk in Germany, that may be the last hope to get vinyl vacuum formed dash in original colors. Otherwise cover in correct vinyl at Budds.

Hopefully your radio surround is not cut under that radio plate. You need a Euro Porsche CR radio, not easy to locate.

Good luck: and it's a great car!

G'day, plenty to do, but its a beauty!!! Looks nice and straight, what is she like underneath?

Also, can you/someone tell me what the large round hole/dial just to the right of the light dials on the left side of the pod is please, post #31, 3rd photo.

Cheers

It's an aftermarket temp gauge. I won't be keeping that.

After spending ALL day on the lawn (mowing, mulching, hauling rocks), I wasn't in the mood to get underneath her like I wanted for some scrubbing. But I did drive it for some errands today (no, I didn't haul mulch in a 928) and this car is a runner! I have a little issue with the syncros on 2nd gear, but the 1-3 gearing isn't too bad for now. This winter, the trans will be pulled and rebuilt.

Exhaust - if anyone has a lead on a proper stock system, please let me know. First preference is something original and correct for this year, but if that's crazy impossible to find, I'll live with a different year for now. I just want it to be STOCK. Also, does anyone know if there was any differences between the OB Euro exhausts and the U.S. versions? Fortunately, Illinois won't be inspecting or smogging this car, so I can return it to a more factory original configuration.

Exhaust: If I remember correctly, the pumpkin muffler is very expensive new ($1000), intermediates is more difficult to find than new mufflers.

Euro exhaust does not have US' CC in the mid-system. Otherwise should be the same.

If you can live with an aftermarket system while searching for the original system's parts, go for the Borla cat-back system. Make sure you get the '78 and not the '79's. It is hooked differently towards the battery box in the back and is slightly more expensive (~$850-900 instead of $650) than the '79. Go to the Borla Exhaust website, then google the specific part number for price. Don't buy from Borla, they are a little more expensive.

Good luck!
