Well, if he wants V8 power, like I did, he ought to go with an 80-84.

I know how it is when the 928 bites. I dare say I wouldn't own any other porshe, something about the V8 has my heart. To be honest, I really would think twice before getting something w/o a V8. A V12 I could live with...

The car is IMHO rather easy to work on, just can't mistake it for a chevy... The body is pretty much bullet proof. He should pay special attention for an 83 or 84 as they have the bigger brakes. I get 22-15 miles to the gallon, and the interor can swallow some rather impressive loads.

Yep, 83 was a good year for the 928...

I don't know Viribus...I have a strange tendency to stray toward things FORD-

An '87 or later Mustang GT is a hellraiser...yet cheap. Probably a bit too cheap in general, but...

The '92 and later Golf GTI/Sport have the avantage of FWD, if not the 5.0's 14 second quarter mile performance. I'd still buy a GTI-

Funny thing: Recently I sold my '66 Ford F100 pickup that I used for airport car duty to a friend/co-worker who wanted to restore it. Since it was nothing more than airport/Bally's/going running/HomeDepot transportation for me, I let it go. The replacement is amazing: $3k buys a '97 Ford Aerostar with 97k miles/155k Km.

THIS picture shows a cheap vehicle that does anything. I call it "Conchy", because of the Key West flag license plate...

I have always felt that if you don't go for the most popular, you can get a lot of used car for little money. I've always driven cars that were not the most popular - and they were never younger than two years. I skipped the depreciation on all these cars, got in low and had little loss apart from repairs and maintenance. Of course, THAT is a big factor on cars like a 928 or a Saab with a German V6 and a failing timing belt gear...

My parents had a couple Ford Aerostars, my brother was still in high school then and he LOVED those vans. He could fit all his friends in there, always volunteered to drive (so he was never stranded at a boring party) and the back had enough room for, well, lets just say extra-curricular activities with the girls....nice!

Maybe Normy got his for the same reasons.....

Germanic construction [built like a brick sh*thouse], great handling, parts on the cheap at a Pep-Boys near you....and 30 mpg in the city. Oh, did I mention that you can put a couch in the yawning hatch...and nearly close it?

AN interesting side effect of owning and working on a '92 and later VW: Many of the things you learn from working on these cars translate directly to your future S2, S4, GT, or GTS....

I'm with Normy on this one. I suggested the same thing in the other thread
