Default engine bay light

Simple - doesnt work. No blown fuses. Book shows fuse 3, connector J3 feeds it through switch on fender/guard lip. No V at switch. tried to follow back. Verified that wire at bulb is the one coming out of hood/bonnet at left rear edge where washer pipe goes in. Tried to check continuity of lead from that connector to fuse panel- got so many coninuity beeps (everything I touched), seems the lead is earthed somewhere. Seeing as the bulb only has one wire, this should supply 12V when the hood is open (switch closed), and the bulb holder is earthed - therefore the supply line shouldnt be earthed with bulb removed, or line separated at the hood connector.
Anybody BTDT please???
Also, looking at the fuse board connectors, how do I read the numbers? I know they letter from A on left, skip I and O, but where do the numbers run?
Like this?

Turn your headlights/Parkinglights on. it only works when your light are on.

Have you had the lamp holder apart? There is a small mercury vial switch inside and the spring and the back of the plate can get grungy.
A cleaning fixed mine soon after I bought the car. HTH

The old style light with the internal mercury switch, as I suspect yours is, tend to go Tango Uniform over time. That old style is no longer available from what I've heard.

The later models have a switch along the fender that is activated when the hood is opened.

Randy,
I just love that age old expression - Tango Uniform. Are you a pilot by chance?

SilverSFR,
Thanks for pointing out that the parking lamps had to be on...I was trouble shooting this lamp the other day...now I know. My 89 has the fender-mounted switch.

Best,
Tim

Gotta love 928 electrics. Even when stuff works. Mine comes on only if the ignition key is turned to the accesory position. I dont have to have my lights on.

Just curious, how many of you have license plate lights that are on ALL the time when the car is running, day or night?

Is that normal?

Same thing with BMW's. They also require the parking lights to be on before the hood work light will illuminate. Its a safety thing, I guess so that some Bozo will see you on the side of the road and not smash into you.

Central Power Panel Connectors

Terminals are numbered

4 8
3 7
2 6
1 5

or

3 6
2 5
1 4

On your car:
A on the left end;
X on the right end;
No "I" (there is an "O")
The two short ones in the center are Y and Z.

The color codes also help.

Bern, Have license plate lights, so fuse 3 is ok. No 12V at hood switch or light. Was looking for 12v at J3 connector, as this is where its shown as sourced from. Found the lead into the hood cavity was earthed...??
Anyway, trying all the scenarios tomorrow now.
Thanks guys,

Hello John,
There is a switch inside the lamp, this switch should turn to 'on' when you open the hood!
Regards from Erik in Denmark
PS: Are the old WUR from Denmark still working?

Erik,
Absolutely that WUR is working very well thank you! Had the car tuned when I got it home, needed a small amount of richer mixture is all, doing very well.
Dont forget my offer when can get down here. We had a small frenzy recently, got 19 cars together for a country run, had a great time.
cheers,

John,
I had the same problem with my car. took the cover near bulkhead off (the one that hides the wiper motor etc) and found a single pole connector in there for the lamp. It was corroded, and cleaning it fixed the problem.

John, Thats the connector I was trying to trace back to the board. Seemed to be earthed, everything on the board was connected to it (well, nearly everything). Certainly no 12v on it that I could find. trying again today....
