I've read over this thread several times, pondering a few thoughts.
The first thought I had was a failing ignition switch, second, would be the ignition amps. Both could produce the symptoms you describe.

Does one of your posse have a cps you could swap-in?
Or oscilloscope to check wave form?
I've had several of them fail before their time on 928 and 944.

Mike, the ignition amplifiers are under a black plastic cover on the driver's side front apron, just in front of the headlight cross bar.

Thanks Seth. Never hear anybody talk about these. Doubt it's the problem since both coils have no spark. I may push him to get a new CPS.........
