Krait: Due to family (Mom) opposition of me driving a car when I am in legal age (which I am not
). She expects me to start driving or even owning car after my freshmen year at college. But I want to just buy the car, work on it for 5 years, and then drive it.
So May I have few suggestions of which car (any car) that I should buy and try to rebuild on.
Someone plz tell me if this is the one i should try to get.

Thanks

Let me rephrase. I like ALL Porsches. The 924 was one of the sharpest looking cars I've ever owned. It was a great highway car, but autocrossing it was more frustrating than fun, at least for me it was. The car was bone stock. Now with some mods it would of been a whole different story.
Some of us like straight line speed and others like speed in the turns. So, to correct my current statement, I personally prefer "turns" and the 914 was better suited for this than the 924. But both are fine cars.
Another preference I have is that I prefer driving cars that are about equally weighted front to rear. The 914 and the 928 are this way. The 924 is front heavy and therefore handles very differently (especially when you start throwing it around the track). Just another opinion.
Ok, and you caught me. I had the heads ported on the 914, so it became a 2.4 liter.

Leth although the 928 is an awsome car, it is not the best car to start with,
what I would recommend doing is maybe get an older small compact car w/ less than 100bhp and learn how to drive first, then move upto a higher powered car say 150bhp drive it for awhile and use this 1 to go to DE events a 924/924S/944 would be your best option, then after you are well versed as to how to actually drive then get a car with alot of ponies ie 928

I think you should get whatever you want, but make sure it has a good BASIS for starting. I am not sure if the 600 dollar one is really a good start.
If I had known what I could have done with 3k when I was younger, it would have been a porsche. NOt a Chevy Lumina that I bought with my brother. I was such an idiot. I am still paying for that mistake today (by having to drive it while I take my whole S4 apart and put it back together)

Lethargy,
You could go many ways here. Ive owned a 79 280zx, great car but I wished it was am 82' turbo, they haul a$$ with some mods. I did a Lt-1 conversion on mine and it was a big job, still even cost with maintaining a 928 over a couple years.
I also had a 87 supra and 91 mr2 turbo, the supra was GT but kinda slow, the Mr2 is fast and incredibly agile. Doesnt have the top end like a 928, but who needs it anyhow?
My 86 928 is allot of fun too, you can pick up one needing some interior and a paint buffing for $3-4k. I love the 928, but I loved the mr2 and 280 as well, I just like the reputation porsche has for their cars and I am supporting my native brethren. If you like the 32v motor in the 85-86 models, its not ,much more money than an earlier car.
Have fun and good luck.

for a starter car as I said low HP, I started with a bobcat stationwagon and a hyundia pony, the bobcat I would subject noone to (piece of *#$&), the pony was actually quite fun to drive and beat the **** outta, but if I had to do it all over again, a good learning car is probably an 80s VW jetta/golf/rabbit, easy and fun to drive ok for a learner, only problem maybe alittle to quick for someone to learn on, but is a great car none the less
in regards to Jon on the 924 the 928 is also 48/52,

I believe you about the weight distribution (I have facts supporting the 914 and the 928 but never checked the 924, a bad assumption on my part), but can you help me understand why that car didn't feel as balanced as the 914 or the 928? It really handled VERY different, and like I said, any chance it had the rear end would come around and pass me up.

The 280Z you listed is a decent canditate as a "fixer-upper".
There are others for sale for a little more, that will not require
a repaint, repairs, etc.. So if you can afford a little more,
you may not have as much work to do... That blue one
needs exterior repairs, paint, and wheels. Not to mention
it may need a few mechanical things, even though it runs...
But if you really want a $500 car, that you can work on,
and make it cool, and fun, etc, this is the car to do it with...
Speaking of looking cool, there is a pretty sweet kit for those
cars, to make a 280Z into a Ferarri 250 GTO replica...

Brendan ....." I am still paying for that mistake today (by having to drive it while I take my whole S4 apart and put it back together) " Yes Brendan you could have purchased another Porsche rebuilt much of it .....shot it in the head , parted it out and be walking ....... Damn Lumina .......just imagine that some people think the purpose of a car is to get you from point A to point B and back again . Mechanic to customer- What is wrong with your car ? customer - I do not know ? that is why I am here . Mechanic well what is it doing ? Customer - In the morning I go out to my car in the drive way get in turn the key .....20 minutes later when I get out of the car ............. I am still in my driveway ! ............Getting back to Lethargy and this thread . He is not of legal age to BUY a car nor drive one and I would seriously doubt that MOM would want that "project" parked near the house for 5 years or so .
