'89 S4 5-Speed - - Lucky Me!
I bought an 89 S4 5-speed. I bought it locally so I didn't have to do any traveling or shipping. I bought it from a friend and client who had owned it probably longer than I have owned any of my 928s.
I had stopped by his place of business a few months ago about something and he happened to say "why don't you buy my 928?" I said "how much?' He said "what would you give me for it?" I said a kind of lowball number, and he said a kind of higher lowball number; then I said only if I had any money. It kind of ended there, except in my mind.
Later when I came across some kind of "extra" money I gathered some of it up and went back over and told him I had some money to back-up my original lowball number. Suddenly his lowball number was a bit higher than before, which put me in the awkward position of quoting his former number which kind of made it look like I was now offering that. Nevertheless we ended up somewhere in between my first number and his first number.
I also had in the back of my mind to check the option list to see if maybe it had the GT option, but it was made in November 88, so it doesn't.
It's a nice white S4 with a maroon interior in very nice condition. Although he said "it needs nothing" it actually needs just about everything, including a Timing belt and water pump, intake refresh, fuel lines, etc. all pretty much on time rather than miles, because he hasn't put many miles on it since he bought it. The indicated miles are good, but not great.
I drove it to my other shop and spent the evening yesterday replacing the left door handle piece that frequently breaks, after reading Alan's thread about how to do that, again. I also am replacing the left door stay which is/was completely inop. I think I'll put some new tires on it probably on a set of chrome Cup 2s I have, merely to get some good out of some 17s I have been saving for too long.
I'll go out later today to finish up on the driver's door and take a couple of pictures. I didn't think to take my camera yesterday.

Yes, Ed, I know the rules; but the rules also allow only one word in the inevitable thread, not two. Your contribution was only "worthless" and Dave beat you to "is."

I just parked it in the shop and started work on the driver's door. I haven't cleaned it up and polished it yet, but maybe soon. I'm still hung up on the door stay. I did get the door panel re-glued in places and have replaced most of the panel clips. I also found that the shifter is a good candidate for the new ***** I'm trying to make since the leather has come completely off the ****, and I have it out of the car right now. The rest of the leather is in pretty good shape. The dash is nice, but the pod is cracked. I have a cowhide in almost the exact color, so I'll probably cover the pod and make a new shifter boot. The leather under the rear quarter windows is not shrunk. The driver's seat has some typical bolster wear, but not as bad as most. The engine compartment is about typical--no jump post cover.

Thanks, Ed. I think so too.
I'm pretty sure the car has been sitting for several years since the license plate on it shows '09. I'm surprised that it even ran on what little gas is in it since it is obviously pretty old. The battery was dead, but it seems to have taken a charge ok.
Swiffer is a good idea. I may try that on all the dust, but then I think I'll go at it with some kind of leather conditioner and some small terry cloth towels.
I'll need to take the other door panel off and re-glue and remount it with new clips. The driver's door panel had two screws in the bottom, which irritates me, but I haven't checked the Passenger's side.
The exterior looks very nice - - no rust anywhere. I haven't actually even looked at the front spoiler to see what condition it is in.
Aside from the maintenance issues, I think cleaning up the engine compartment is going to be one of the biggest tasks.
