Are there any places that restore wings?
My GTS wing has two of its bolts broken loose and needs to be refinished. Anyone know of a shop where I could send it to get it restored?
thanks,
Paul

Have you tried to drill and tap the spoiler, and use bolts instead of the stock nut/washer method? That worked perfectly for me. I think you could restore it yourself quite easily if you're willing to put in the work.

I'm not
There's the problem. I'm not willing to put in the work and expense needed to convert my garage to an HVLP paint booth, and I'm not willing to settle for the kind of results I'd get from a rattle can repaint of the wing.

I didn't know you needed to repaint it as well... any body shop should have the tools and skills to fix the spoiler. Simply remove the damaged area with a grinder, blade, etc... put in a new piece of supporting metal with studs, and fill with an epoxy to seal it up. You could even do THAT yourself and send it off for respray to save the $300 in labor for the prep work.

Just make sure to align everything well.

Haven't had the best luck with local body shops
The guys that I had do my front bumper cover didn't do that great a job, and overran their estimate by about 50%. The shop that recently had me waiting six months to bring my car in for an insurance claim (somebody backed into me in a parking lot), finally refused to work on the car because they were not comfortable working on 928s.
Then, when searching for wing repair details, I found this write up, which makes me think it's not really an any body shop job.

If I can do it (4 years and still holding), you can do it.

I've seen quite a variety of opinions on DIY paint... Everything from, "it's easy" to "don't even think about it."
Thanks,

Hi Paul-
Whoops, I'm guilty of a reading comprehension fail- was focused on the broken mounting bolts and missed the part about needing to repaint as well.
Is the paint on your GTS original and in good shape? What color code? Any good shop should be able to get the proper Glasurit or Spies-Hecker color, just a matter of whether the nearby paint on the rear hatch is faded at all. I do not paint anything that the public might see, way above my pay grade. Totally understand your take on this...
I'd start by fixing the studs myself since you really want to be able to mount your wing on your car so you know the studs line up properly. And then worry about getting it painted.

Be sure to only use stainless hardware in your repair (if you decide to do it yourself. I got the 1/2" barstock 12" length 304 SS from amazon, and the hardware was from the Ace hardware stainless section in the same pitch/diameter as the stock studs.
There's this great 2 part epoxy product called PC7 that bonds to metal, rubber, fiberglass etc. I used it on my fiberglass parts and it bonds to EVERYTHING. Highly recommended... you can even use it to create parts from a mold. http://a.co/7y7Bs8Z

Thanks guys. Good suggestions on the repair method for the mounting.
I think that some of the paint on my car is original. All of it looks pretty bad, though; but the wing has a particular area of... something... that need to be redone.
On the other hand, I'd kind of like to change it to a midnight blue someday. It's black now. So I may just fix the mounting and hold off on the paint.

Paul, the procedure in the pdf link you posted is for S4/GT wings.
Those are the earlier polyurethane foam with the outer rubber skin.
Isn't your GTS wing fiberglass? That's a much simpler paint process.

Paul,
I thought a few years ago on my other 928, that you had recommended Fogg's. I had them so some insurance work for me last year. But that was during the time that the owner passed away.
I thought I had heard that the lead guy there had bought the shop.
Is that one of the shops you are referring to?
My car is black and had also been backed into in a parking lot, Just a little dent, but the work seems pretty good.

Hi Ken,
I probably did recommend Fogg's. They did some good work on my wife's Cayenne. I'm sorry to hear that he's gone. I hadn't heard about that.
No, that was not one of the shops I was talking about. The one that refused to work on 928s is the Body and Fender Shop. The main problem was a guy by the name of Jeff, who went on and on about how he used to work at the Porsche dealership when 928s were new (not sure which dealership, as our current COS one didn't exist back then), and that they are nightmares to work on.
I was thinking of checking with Fogg's on this. I was really disappointed with B&F, though, after waiting six months for the appointment, and especially since we were repeat customers there (they did some paint and body work on my daughter's New Beetle).

I really can't tell if it's fiberglass... maybe... the area where it attaches to the body is some sort of rubber. It had been attempted repaired in the past, so there was a bunch of epoxy and cracked remnants of epoxy underneath there. Inside there were cavities next to / behind two of the bolts. I'm trying to fill them in with the PC7 stuff... then I'll re-drill it to get even depths with the other holes.
