Isn't there a correct direction to rotate the engine. Seems to me I read that rotating the wrong direction is bad. Something about valves dropping. Or am I thinking of something else

Yes and no.

People have said it's "bad" to turn the engine backwards. Considering it can be done, by hand, at about 3 RPM the forces are very small. Compare that to the engine that when stopping will kick back-and-forth as it comes to a rest. The forces when turning it manually are trivial.

But... when I'm going around to get bolts and stuff, I will turn the engine the "proper" way and go backwards as needed to get alignment and access.
