Default Spindle swap? Yes? NO? Maybe?

Ok, looking at getting new ball joints on the OB. But I was thinking a little farther forward on the idea and maybe someone has done or attempted this.
Can a later model 928 Spindle be used on a OB 928?
Looks like I would need to upgrade breaks and all hardware, would I need to swap A arms and steering as well?

Any input would be great, unable to find any info.

78-82 US cars are pre-"S" brakes.

I upgraded my 81 to brakes / spindles from an S just for the brake upgrade, same control arms.

You can also upgrade to S4 spec (86.5-95) to gain the even larger brakes. This will also require replacing the upper / lower control arms from an S4 since they are shorter on the later cars.

That is great news. I will need breaks any how. May as well do bigger breaks, spindles and ball joints all at once.

But...S3 to S4 brakes, is just S4 spindles/lower ball joints, right?

That's a deal on the S4 front (minus breaks) The calipers aren't cheap. What wheels are you running?

And what will be needed to get good front/back balance with the stock OB rear brakes?

Running 17" wheels right now. I have a set of newer ball joints in the garage so I wont have to buy them. All Ill need are spindles, calipers, rotors and sounds like hubs for the swap.

I'll keep the $600 price in mind for the front end. Long way to ship from PA to AZ.

Ok, now you are making me think.

I thought there were two distinct upper arms. 78-86, and 86.5-95. I'm not as familiar with the 85/86 (pre 86.5) stuff though. I thought they were all "S" until the S4 stuff came into play.

I'm digging through parts numbers now, I know better than to go all from memory on this stuff but time to time I get it a go!!

This was my thinking. Guess this is why I post my questions before thinking its as easy s 1, 2, 4.

From what I have looked at, I should be able to swap, lower ball joint, all breaking hardware, and spindle. This sounds to simple.

If you swap 86- spindles with S4 ones you will have more negative camber than normal as the upper a arms are shorter. Popular with some racers.

If you want to upgrade to S4 spindles you will need to swap the entire suspension, the racks is the same so that you can keep, but everything else must go.

Otherwise if you just want S4 brakes, get the adapter brackets and 993 rotors.

Quick Reply: Spindle swap? Yes? NO? Maybe?
