Default Early Tensioner Question

Good morning!

Since I have to redo my timing belt, I may as well address a very small weep from the tensioner. I rebuilt it and install an aluminum adapter from Roger. It was an extremely tight fit. I was surprised to see that it is weeping oil from under the adapter. This is the sealed early tensioner.

So I have a couple of options.....

1. )Rebuild another one of my 79 tensioners with a new adapter and epoxy or seal it underneath

2.) Rebuild an 83 tensioner that I have on the shelf that would not need the adapter

3.) Attempt the remove the existing adapter off the tensioner, re seal it, and refit it .

PKT not an option for me Not that theres anything wrong with that

did you JB weld the first adapter? if not why? That is how it goes together.
the crimp on the clamp should be at 11 while looking at the boot from the drivers fender.

Thats the million dollar question. I plead ignorance. I got the adapter with no instructions. I did a search but only came up with one post and the user didn't epoxy it on. Then I found a really old post from GB were he mentions the epoxy but that was after my install.

that's my story and I am sticking to it

So the epoxy is a must? Wonder I get it off or need to order a new one. (They are not cheap). I would think that it would just move the epoxy out of the way, its such a tight fit

The early tension is not sealed per se. It does have a small weep hole on the top-most position (when installed on the engine). It's 'V'-shaped and located on the circular parts of the tensioner (where the boot clamps on).
When using the GB adapter, this weep hole should still function albeit reduced in size by the adapter.
Oil would leak from here if the tensioner was overfilled.

forgot all about that V notch. I bet I overfilled it and it started leaking after final adjustment. I need a large pad of post it notes for my projects from now on. I seem to forget more than I remember! Thanks !

If Roger is still selling my adapter (which I'm sure he is), it should have come with both an "O"-ring and instructions on how to file the high spots off of the tensioner (the tensioners are cast and vary quite a bit), so the adapter fits on nicely. Plus there should be instructions with pictures on how to epoxy it on. Additionally, you should have received a tensioner boot (928 105 552 06, a tensioner pin (928 105 551 02), and a clamp (928 512 564 02). I supply all of these pieces when I sell the aluminum adapter, but I do not provide them to Roger....he was going to make up his own "kits" (he can buy those pieces from Porsche as cheap as I can, so there is no reason for me to ship them to him.)

If you need a copy of those instructions, please call Mary at 714 879 9072 or E-mail her at MaryBBRD@att.net and she will send you those, immediately.

Thanks Greg. I did get the complete package minus the instructions. I will email Mary today. Not sure if this adapter will come off but perhaps I just over filled it?

I have Roger sending me abother otinger clamp, I will pull the boot and see what's going on and go from there. This was a quality machined piece that fit as tight as OJs glove, I don't relish taking it off.

thanks again for the great service

I do not know why you did not get the instructions. Please proceed with what ever you need to do to get it off. Heat will soften the epoxy and it should come off, as mentioned above.

If it gets damaged, I will happily send you another.

The smaller diameter rubber boot for the early tensioner is NLA. So Greg makes a alloy ring which uses the larger diameter boot.

A wise statement. Yes, I will admit that sometimes I get a little stubborn and neglect to ask when I should. This is a great place for help with out judgement!
