Default Installing a door stop

Hi all, I installed a door stop on the drivers side of my 1990 S4 because the original stop was no longer holding the door open.

After installing the new stop I can't shut the car door. I used a fair amount of pressure to close the door but I was afraid that if I used too much pressure I would damage the door frame or the car frame where the strap meets the car body.

Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong? Maybe I should lube it or just give it a good shove?

Thanks

The new ones suck. Too stiff. Find a good used one from a porsche recycler.

They are the same left and right. I only say this above, because its what I did.

I tried several new ones and they all were way to tight. I opened one up and modified it, to loosen it, but the detents on the new were different than the original.

i went to my local parts recycler- Parts heaven- and found a great old one that works great. must of been from a passenger door.

You may have installed one that is intended for the other side of the car, or installed the correct one upside down.

I feel like one from a recycler will be the same as the one I took off my car and then reinstalled. It simply doesn't hold the door open on even the slightest incline.

I installed it in the same orientation as the one that came off the car but just to be safe I flipped it over and installed it again and it didn't work in either orientation. I think it is simply too stiff.

Thanks for the responses.

It's been a while since I last did this, but I recall there is no difference in the parts between the left and right.

I replaced both of mine (87 S4) a few months back. As Nicole says - no difference between left and right. Also, I can't see how you would install one upside down and get it to bolt up.

Mine were both very stiff when I first fitted them and I was also worried about bending metal. However, they have got much easier very quickly. Car is not a daily driver so it's just been occasional use as I work my way around the car fixing stuff.

Regards
Duncan

I know this isn't directly helpful, but I replaced both of mine with new five years ago, and had no problem closing either door subsequently, just nice positive movement into the three detente positions, and no problem holding door on an incline!

It sounds as if the parts have changed in some way since?

Nicole is mostly correct. The door stop/stay itself is the same for both sides, but the anchor pivot that bolts to the door jam is the part of the whole assembly that is is identified as either left or right. A new stop/stay probably does not come with the door jam anchor, but the breakers commonly sell these as either left or right because they commonly sell the whole assembly.

Did you change the pivot anchor also? If so, maybe that is the part that is intended for the other side?

Do you have a picture of what you have installed at this point?

My '88's door stops did nothing to hold the doors open. I installed the 'fix' kit from 928 Motorsports and they work perfectly now. Relatively cheap, easy to install, and very effective solution for me.

What is in the kit?

A couple of, I think titanium, metal strips, a couple of washers, and a couple of zip ties. I was a little sceptical but my door stops now work perfectly. 15 min easy install. I've had them 5 years at least and am very pleased with the result.

This looks like it:

Do you need to remove the inner door panel for the install?

That's the kit. As I recall, you remove the bolt which attaches the door stop to the car door frame and that's the only disassembly required. Might be an instruction set on the Motorsports websites but it's straight forward as I recall it

I have been working on a small project to rebuild these stops/stays. What happens is that the spring loaded nylon blocks that have a steel roller in them (two per) wear out so that the hole is too big and then the rollers do not put enough or any pressure on the central shaft rolling between them.

If anyone is replacing theirs and discarding the originals I would like to have the originals as cores to rebuild. I'll pay a small price for them and the cost to mail them.
