Speedo differences...
I have been searching for the answer to this here and on other boards so I apologize if I just missed it...
What are the differences in speedometers that are fitted to our cars from the factory?
My '83 USA S-model has a 170-mph version. I have seen several cars with a 160-mph version. I have seen cars from 1980-82 or so that have the 85 mph version (I do know that was a US Gov mandate for a couple of years).
So was there any rhyme or reason to who received what as original? Obviously there have been a lot of swaps over the years. And I also believe there was a factory option to have the speedo show kph and mph or mph only. Does that mean they got the 160-mph version, or the 170- or did it matter?
Just wondering if anyone has put together a list of the variants and their original fitment.

My 1990 S4 came with an 180 mph speedometer:
I know that this speedometer is calibrated to the magnetic ring in the diff and the speedo sensor on the back of the diff. When I went to larger diameter tires, it was off by at least 10%.
So last year I added a GPS speedometer:
Which hopefully will show the real speeds that I'm going.
