Default Early Engine Vibration dampers

I'm replacing my engine vibration dampers (engine shock absorbers) on my 1980. I cannot find a torque spec for the bolts. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks as always!

torque is not really important. just tighten by hand on your own feeling. btw : I used the engine vibration dampers of a Mercedes 190 model of 1983. Cost per damper = 40$ instead of 120$ for original Porsche dampers. You only need to put some shims at the top fixating.

It can't be. This is German engineering. Everything must have a specification!

How do you know when they are bad? Mine are stiff and hold pressure.

10mm bolts (17mm head) grade 8.8 = 32 ft lbs.

As long as you can move them through the entire travel and they have no "dead spots" where they move without resistance, they are fine.

I have no resistance whatsoever. The real tell telltale sign they are bad is the bushings are completely gone. Thanks!

Yes, those are definitely bad.

Check the mounts at the same time, if you haven't already replaced them. If the top metal bracket is no longer attached to the rubber (the rubber is vulcanized to the metal, originally), they also needs to be replaced.

The mounts control most of the movement. The shocks slow the movement down. The fact that your bushing are completely gone probably means the mount themselves have been broken for years and the shocks have been doing the mounts job.

However, one never knows with these cars. Someone could have replaced the mounts and left the worn out shocks in place.
