Default 1982 US 928 Cutting Out While Driving

Hello all,

I have a 1982 928 US model. Recently it has started to have an issue where it will cut out in the middle of driving. I've noticed that it seems to happen more often when it decelerates coming to a stop or when making relatively sharp turns (into a driveway or parking spot). I am stuck for what could be causing this - 99% of the time it runs fine, and then it will just shut off, the red "!" will come on and I have to put it in neutral and restart it. It never really has trouble restarting, always on the first or second try.

I know this can only be due to two things, either spark or fuel, and feel like it is more likely spark related considering how suddenly it cuts out. I've looked at the green wire and jostled it around some while the car was running to see if that did anything but no luck although perhaps a better examination is in order.

Any ideas Rennlist? At this point I'm relatively lost, I've never had the car cut out like this before.

I'm not as well versed on these cars as many others here, but had a similar issue with a 914. Is it possible the fuel pump is failing and the acceleration prior to the deceleration is using up the fuel in the fuel accumulator and then when you're decelerating, you're essentially out of gas, which causes the stall. You can test this theory by trying to do a mid gear long pull, which requires a constant supply of fuel. If it starts sputtering at the higher end, it's because you used up all the available fuel and it's not being resupplied quickly enough.

I have had a similar issue but differs a little. Happened last weekend.
I went for a 4 hour drive, when coming down from a 8000 ft spot to 5000ft in about 30 minutes I started getting hesitation at light throttle, continued to get worse the remaining 10 minutes home.

So I figured I would start simple.
I have replaced the fuel filter and noticed fuel leaks at the pump.
So I'm repairing that before going to deep on the issue.

May be a good place for you to start.

I have seen some fuel filters get plastic ( clear plastic like a cigarette wrapper ) in the filter and it will at times get sucked up right to cut off fuel. Hard to find in gas, real hard when it is in a fuel line.

What have you tried so far? Is it always after a fuel up?

Have you checked the green wire at the Distributor? Maybe it is broken or in need of repair.

Let us know.

first thing I would check is the battery hold down bracket,
the battery terminals for tightness,
make sure the POS terminal is covered and not shorting on the battery cover.
check the 2 grounds on the right cam tower the engine block and the chassis to battery strap
