In a previous life i was a bit of an ICE freak, and had seriously considered getting a 740il and loading it up with subs, amps, speakers, tv screens and DVD players etc. Looked at a few and they were nice cars, certainly not a slouch. However, i went for a 928 in the end.

I have a '97 A8 that I purchased 16 months ago with 87k miles. Currently I have 131k. The car has been great with very few problems. I am thinkiing about replacing it with something different, but have yet to find something that I enjoy as much in a larger sedan with a lot of hwy use. For the price I paid, $15k, the car is hard to beat. Comparable 7 series Bimmer is about $6k more.

Not as large as an L model, but I have had 2 adults back there and our child seat in the middle with no complaints. If your budget is a little higher, the L model came out in 2000 I think and there is even more room.
