If you know the ownership history you should be able to determine if/when the heads were removed. If the heads were off within the last 10 years then it might be worth leaving as is. However, if there is uncertainty then refreshing the head gaskets and a good check of all associated with that should give you at least 20 years of reassurance.

Given you have the motor out and the wherewithal to do so, surely it makes sense to follow the good advice you were given? Pulling the heads, changing the valve seals and checking the condition of the valve seats at this stage is probably a "no brainer" as is changing the crank seals and inspecting the oil pump.

On the other hand stick the motor is and visualise how you would feel if after a month or so you would have to rip it all out again.

When I transplanted my S4 motor into the GTS chassis it was a bit easier for me as I had someone to do the work [albeit I supervised each step]. I was told my motor was OK but did not accept that given I saw some damage on one cam wheel and the cam cover. Sure enough I had two bent inlet valves on No7. Apart from that the motor was in excellent condition albeit I found a bit of corrosion on the outer water jacket for some bizarre reason. Generally speaking I was well pleased with my intervention but I made the decision not to disturb the bottom end and have often wondered whether I should have changed out the rings. I have good even compression and excellent leak down but even so I still wonder about this.

Bottom line - it is your choice at the end of the day.
