Best way to ship large trim panels?
I'm trying to get an estimate for shipping some rear quarter trim panels from North Texas to Southern California. All the online quoting tools for UPS, FedEx, USPS, has costs of $300+. Obviously, that's completely ridiculous. How do people ship these things??
The box is 66"x24"x36" and probably ~30lbs. I'm seriously at a loss... Can someone who has shipped similar items (hoods, doors, trim panels, etc) guide me here? I would think this shouldn't cost more than $100!

An old option I used was Greyhound when I was in CA. Have not used them in a while. So I just entered in Dallas, TX to Anaheim, CA (not sure where truly starting from, or going to, but a guess to obtain a quote.
This is for 2 pieces, max dimension is 66", about 30# each from cities I mentioned, insured for $1000 for both pieces, here is their quote:
GPX Standard - 5 to 7 DAYS - Self Service (Station to Station) 2 $202.87
GPX Standard - 5 to 7 DAYS - Semi-Full Service (Door To Station) 2 $253.39
GPX Standard - 5 to 7 DAYS - Semi-Full Service (Station to Door) 2 $250.23
GPX Standard - 5 to 7 DAYS - Full Service (Door to Door) 2 $300.75
BTW, I have only shipped smaller items with them but worked out fine.
You can do with the proper zips here if interested:

Greyhound is great but wait until after the holidays. Took close to a month for one package to make it to me when it was shipped early Nov because of Thankgiving travel.

Seems like greyhound is the overall vote for everyone. The strange thing is I don't remember having to pay very much for shipping panels like this when I was a buyer (ebay purchases, etc), and they've always come via UPS or similar.
Hell, even getting TWO 928 seats shipped didn't cost too much ($125 from LA Auto Parts on ebay). Granted, I realize they have a corporate discount, but wow! Busfreighter link was excellent. Thanks again for fast responses everyone!

Just an FYI in regards to UPS. I quoted online a set of wheels and tires to be shipped from PA to OKC for over $300. Greyhound quoted $138 and I would need to pick up. The guy who sold me them told me to setup a UPS account up through eBay for discounted shipping. I did that and had the wheels and tires shipped to my door for $143. Blew me away the difference in cost.

Sign up for Unishippers.com. It's free for you and it's quote based LTL truck shipping. Shipped a front bumper, fender, liners, headlights, etc for $110 from Chicago to southern Florida. It's an amazing source for shipping. The box was over 6' long x 3.5' tall x 3' wide and weighed probably 100 pounds.

Fastenal was a great way to ship a totally intact rear S spoiler from Indiana to Charlotte.
We figured out the closest Fastenal store to the recipient.
When it arrived, they called him to come to the store and pick it up.
Key was making a good protective box.
Seems like shipping was 50 or 60 dollars, box was something like 48 x 48 x 5.
Cost about $25 or $30 for some luan and 2X4s and drywall screws to build the box.

EXCELLENT advice on the UPS account through eBay sellers!
I did register on uShip, which is a bidding service for TL, LTL, soft-pack, white-glove, ect. The bids ranged from $150-$350 for a 40lb box that was 66x24x36in. Soft-wrapping it would have probably been the cheapest, as it would then be priced by weight... but I never pursued that option. Also, the trim panels are somewhat fragile so that would have me a bit nervous, even with insurance.
Greyhound was cheapest for a single cardboard-boxed package by far ($90), but required the buyer and myself to drive to the nearest Package Express location. Busfreighter allowed for insurance up to $1000, so that was nice... as Greyhound itself only allows up to $300.

Just an fyi I ran across the $300 also, greyhound told me it's $1000 and when I did the quote they verified that $1000 online. I am not sure what portal I ran across at first, but they redirected me to the correct one, the one I linked in my first post above..
Hope you find the best rate out there!
