Nokian is great and tested best by Tire Rack. I really enjoyed my Michelin WinterSport SP 3D on my 335xi when I drove in the city-suburbs. Now I am more to the country than suburb, I put on Blizzak.
I haven't tried them personally, but I've heard very good things about Vredestein winter tires from a friend who had them on his 600hp Mercedes S600 that he drove in the winter in CT. IIRC he had Wintrac extreme S.
I have them mounted on a set of staggered stock slotted wheels on the 84-928. So I've heard about the alternatives, but what say you about the Pirelli's?
The useful life of a set of snows is that long on a sports car?
It all depends on the driver, conditions and how you take care of them. If you don't get at least 4-6 years out of a set of new winter tires, I'd be very disappointed on any vehicle.
There's an old expression that I've personally experienced: "Old bald winter tires are still better than new summer tires in the snow".
#1 thing is to get them off once the temperatures start to climb. These are not so much "snow tires" as they are "cold weather" tires.
From what I have heard the magic number is 45º. The rubber in a snow tire is formulated to stay soft at lower temperatures and the benefit starts at that temp. Of course, the opposite is true for a summer tire which has rubber made to not melt at higher temperatures and becomes rock hard at low temps. With wide summer tires on the GTS, I can easily exercise the PSD in the winter. If you live in an area with lower temps most of the time, use snow tires. Also, the width of the snow tire should be narrow to put more pressure on the ground and not float on the top of the snow.
