Default Oil pump O-ring replacement

I've checked the archives, Nichols' site and the manual and haven't found help.

Based on Rennlist recomendations (during a T-Belt, Waterpump change), I am tackling the seals. The Cam Seals, Main Seal, Oil Pump seal and (the problem) Oil Pump Oil Ring.

I've got the 3 bolts out of the Oil Pump. The pump rotates counterclockwise and clockwise rather freeling to a point. I can wiggle it out enough to see the O-Ring but then it gets stuck and doesn't want to budge. Last night I said screw it, I just won't replace it. Now this morning I realize I'll be kicking myself if there is a leak there after she buttoned up.

Any suggenstions before I abandon this cause?

Well the difficult part is usually getting the 3 bolts out, you are nearly there !! Not sure what the pump is getting hung up on though, there is only the o-ring holding it on.

Also I bet now you have disturbed it, if you put it back together without replacing it will leak ! I think there are 2 0-rings too, one on the shaft and one on the pump body.

Chris,

I think you're right about disturbing it and not replacing it, it will probably leak.

You're also right about the 2 seals.

The shaft seal is visable and don't think I have a problem replacing it. The problem is the O-ring on the pump body and to get to it, I've got to pull it out. For now, just more cussing and pulling and cussing and pulling. That thing is hard to get a hold of.

The o-ring leaked on my car. I'd recommend getting it out and replacing it. There's no other retainer after the three bolts.

Thanks Glen,

I've read a few threads about that being the leaker... so I've convinced myself to replace it.

Now that I've had time to think about it, with the oil pumps bolts aside, I may just temporary put the gear back on and lock it in with the retaining nut. I know I can get my a better grip on the gear than the outside pump body.

Man is that thing a PIA to get a hold of.

Thanks Sterling,

I missed your earlier reply about the pulley. Thanks for the idea.

I've got some engine assembly lube, which I hope will aid the re-install as well as protect during intial start up. I'm hoping the gear thing works... in both directions with ease.

I also just bought a 4 set of a pick and hook set. 4 screwdriver looking tools... a fishhook, a 45 degree, a 90 degree and a straight pick to remove the shaft seals.
