Default charging problems ???

Hi!

The voltmeter has been strange since the moment i bought the car and is very often low but usually jumps up and everything has worked a couple of weeks. This morning, while driving the the anuall test(ofcours !!), the lights slowly went out and i stopped the car. It started with help from another car but mine still wasn´t charging so i went home and looked at previous posts. Having owned a 944 with bulbfailure(warning light) i felt stupid not to have checked the warning light and it did not come on so i tought, ok down with the POD and change it BUT...

The warning bulb is ok and so seems the resistor. Why isn´t it on when the car isn´t charging ? what else could be broken in this line ?

The alternator looks brandnew but i haven´t been able to remove it yet.
There is a connection on the back of it that hasn´t got any wire on it but i can´t find any loos ones. How many should there be in the back of it ??
What i can feel is two large wires together and one small one and then the empty connector ??

The batteri is fine and the rear groundwire is new, the other groundings have not been checker out yet but will be tomorrow, pls any comments will be great !

/Best, Per

The trick is to 1st disconnect the 14 pin plug at th positive lug in the engine compartment. You know, where you jump the car. ground the blue field wire here and see if the light works. If not, remove the rear cover on the altenater and ground the blue field wire. if the light works then you need an alt. Oh, while you are running these tests do not crank the engine.

The ignition switch should be on while you are doing Jim's tests...

Thanks, Jim & wally !

When i disconnected the 14 pin connector i noticed that it wasn´t nice lookin at all but had 3( i think) blue wires in it so i chickened out and cleaned it first and put in some WD40. That solved the problem right a way so i adjusted the voltmeter to a more accurate reading since the POD was out anyway !, put eveything together with cleaned connectors and reostats and now everything works better than ever !. Thanks guys !

Just wish i knew it yesterday but then again my connectors still would have been bad and the instrument light still would have been dimmed, now it´s not !

Per,

Corrosion in this connector can cause many problems with starting, charging, etc.

There should be a plastic cover over the connector on the fender, retained by a screw-on cap on the jump start terminal. If the cover is missing, water may run into the connector from the fender/hood opening seam and cause corrosion. There also should be a slip-on edge protector on the sheet metal that helps.

Yep!, that one is missing and since the car was out in the rain the other day it stayed infront of the garage, rather than inside as it used to, over night and then came the problems...
