Not sure if I'm an expert, I've only had 40-50 GTS engines apart, but I've never seen or heard of a cracked GTS head....so I'd say they are not "prone" to cracking.

Even the early, pre "raised boss" heads that were redesigned because of cracking are rare to find cracked.

Keep in mind thst people can do incredibly stupid things to engines, so anything is possible.

thanks Greg, 40-50 GTS engines makes you a grand master.
the reason I ask is I bought a second hand bare head on ebay from a Porsche breaker which was described as an S4 head but was cast with 7R.
as I found out from other guru's it was a GTS head.
I bought it for 111GBP.
when I have taken a good look at it- date cast into it is 12/94- I cannot see anything wrong with it -there is no damage to the fire ring part of the head, tried cams in it and both turn freely and no sign of oil starvation on the head/cam caps.
valve guides are perfect and no damage I can see to where the lifters go

but it has been removed in the past, I can see sandpaper has been used on it to get it clean, then it had been refitted, then removed again and listed on ebay.

I still need to get it checked for flatness but was just curious as to if anything not visible was prone to happen to a GTS head.

cheers

I think the GTS heads have some extra holes drilled in the head gasket surface. Not sure if it would cause an issue if used on a non GTS engine. Maybe Greg will see this question.

If you have a need for a single GTS head, start by having it pressure tested.

If it is just a curiosity piece, leave it alone....
