Pretty much based on condition.
The parts alone with a manual trans for the car is going to be around $3500-4000 depending on the what parts are still good. A nice complete interior is $2500, a busted up, worn out, filthy interior is worth about $200.
Non-shifting, no LSD trans is worth $1100 or so, a good shifting, smooth synchro trans with LSD is worth $2800 or so.
OTOH - a good condition, low mileage, good orig paint, well optioned car with up to date maint and box of receipts can be worth over $25k.
Condition is most of the answer.

lets say it has LSD, and a good trannie.. paint is ok. interior has the normal cracks and shrinking of the leather.
some plastic parts broken, etc. normal for a 30 year old car.
$15k is my guess, is that the ball park? and if welll maintained, as Doc says, $25k?

I misunderstood your post at first. I though you were referring to the price of a whole car not the transmissions. This spring when I was researching transmissions because I was looking for a replacement for mine with a cracked case. The prices for a used unknown mileage, un verified working condition transmission was about 1500 -2500. I found several early years fro about 1500 - 2000. But it was nearly impossible to find a 87-89 unit. I did find 2. In speaking with people the market price for a known working condition transmission can be upward of $2800. There is one that came up on eBay about a month ago that was listed twice for $1000. The seller had a nice video of the working condition and had claimed to measure the runout of the syncros. There are a couple listed right now too

That $18K is way below the Hagerty valuation, I think. I mean, considering I paid $14K for my 1988 auto with 133K miles back in 2010, when values were supposedly at their low point, that $18K on a manual with far less miles is a horrible piece of data for the idea that our S4 values are increasing. Will the values ever actually go up, or is it just hype?

From the 928OC.org VIN decoder: WP0JB0927KS860729, US-spec '89 S4 5-speed, M28.41 engine and G28.12 gearbox with a 2.64 rear end, no LSD. Options are the usual: radio, side strips, 5-speed, rear AC, sunroof.
