Like many of you, I have jumped on the LED retrofit bandwagon, at least when it comes to interior lights. A while ago I purchased a replacement set of interior festoon bulbs for the doors, overheads, and trunk from Woodypeck.
The bulbs were nice and bright (6000Kelvin colour temp which is daylight pure white). Too bright and too blue for my liking. The full spectrum lights were a little harsh and felt a bit out of place in the interior. So I researched some other color temperature replacements from SuperBrightLEDs. I purchased the color warm white in two different models.
So here is the comparison, the leftmost light is from woodypeck it's the nicest quality and includes a heatsink on the back. The 6-LED and the 3-LED units from superbrightLED are fairly minimalist.
In the vehicle the warm white units from superbightLED are the color temperature I wanted. The six LED unit is larger and has some interference with the rocker style switches. So I put the 3 LED lights in overhead and the 6 LED lights in the doors. Take a look and decide for yourselves.
Incidentally, I will be selling my woodypeck LED's if anyone is interested.
I used these as well, they are direct fit but a few mm longer than stock. I slightly bent the conductor springs for a good fit, 10 secs of work and easily reversible.
Are these direct replacements for the incandescent bulbs, or do you need to add some resistors to make them work properly?
No resistors needed for interior courtesy lights and they are a direct fit.
Resistors are only needed in places where there is a bulb warning system that monitoring resistance/load to trigger a fault. That would include brake lights, turn signals, maybe headlights too.
Only rear lighting has direct bulb monitoring. The rear + rear/side marker lights and the brake lights are monitored, nothing else.
Indirectly the turn signals are 'monitored' since they will flash faster if a bulb is out. But for LED's you will need a whole new flasher module or it won't flash properly at all, and these LED flasher modules provide no monitoring feature at all.
Headlight monitoring is visual via the tell tale nipples on the top of some (but not) all H4/H5 lenses.
I only have a stop lamp warning light with my LED conversion, no warnings for tail lamp.
For turn signals, replace your relay with this part for a great result: CF13JL-AR: 3 Pin Black Japanese Adjustable Flasher
I just fitted the 3 LED superbright interior lights in cool white. I like what I see and i see more.
Typical 928 ocd 5 minute job turned into an hour with cotton bud cleaning of inside the lenses, treating the contacts with deoxit.
Then an argument with the owners manual about the door switch orientation. I took the executive decision. The part number should be readable left to right.
