So we see what happens with the title--note on the insurance papers said Washington will issue a WA rebuild title for cars between 6 and 20 years old--and an '87 is going on 30 now.

It may be just back to the middle aged BMW's (740 and 840)
I have played around in this game before, actually purchased a fire car and rebuilt it. Most likely your title is now 'salvage' and you will have to take the car back to the state patrol and get it inspected for a 'rebuilt' status. The inspection is fairly basic, they will look it over and check VINs. Most important is to have pictures of the original damage and receipts for all the parts needed to repair. You MUST be able to show where ALL the replacement parts originated (if used must have VIN of other parts car).

Not sure of current process, but it was possible if they have questions, that they would only offer a provisional title (held by the state) for three years. This wouldn't stop you from selling during that period but could cause some additional hassle.

If your going to keep it and don't care about resell, use it as a play car.
If you are thinking about fixing for resale, I'd question that as your risk for losing would be higher.
If you sell or part it out, the proceeds are 'gravy'.

What's the condition of the sheet metal, paint and interior? If you have good paint and int and just need the fire stuff repaired, someone should try to save it rather than all the vultures(like me) tear out the stuff they need.

We lose enough enough 928s every year, if we can try to save another I'm all for that.

Paint sucks-victim of an apparent attempt to re-clearcoat. A Southwest car for most of its life..
Nose has been dinged and bondoed.
Sheet metal has only a few minor dings.
All glass is intact and not de-laminating.
Compression # are all within limits with one lower but still in limits.
Interior is sitable but not pretty and has seen high humidity for a while up here.
Electrics would be fun in a masochistic sort of way. Victim of one or more bad stereo installs.
It was a "hey lets fix it up enough to drive it for a bit and get Porsche off my bucket list" project.

In defense of my second tier other German toy it isn't quite a box stock kinda thing.

Edited to about 320 to 330 hp with a 5 speed auto and 3.64 gears I was assuming it could be quicker than the S4--maybe not faster but quicker to fast. I suppose sort of like having a fast Opel.

Very nice indeed.

Your S4 looks decididly salvageable - good if you can post a couple of under hood shots if they help demonstrate the damage a bit further. If you do a search and take a look at the splendid things Ted [Cosmo Cramer] did after his barbeque it might help puts things into perspective for you.

If all else fails I am sure there will be others who might like to take this project on rather than send it to the knackers yard.

The damage is almost too minimal to take pictures of. Good thing I have fire nozzles on my hoses.

So if it gets a useable title the process will probably continue toward making it driveable again. Too many miles to ever be worth much anyway.

I may take a while to get back to it because while it was living on the lift everything else started demanding lift time.

I have a house on the Oregon side I need to get sold before we run out of escapee Californian buyers. And a couple of other cars to sell in the big city rather than leading the unwashed masses to my hideout in the woods.

Another picture:

Interesting, the insurance company actually listed your car on IAA for a future salvage sale, no details. Just a picture. They pulled it from the site now. I can see the IAA sticker on your windshield, did they actually take the car from you for a while ?

Yes. That seems to be State Farms process now. Wouldn't send an appraiser to my house but sent a flatbed to haul it to be examined. I looked up the invoice number to find the car listed at IAA as not yet for sale. Was a bit disturbing. Still trying to imagine how two 25 to 30 mile tows are more efficient cost wise than the guy in the car.

You are a glutton for punishment. The 840/850 are the redheaded stepchild of BMW as the 928 is for Porsche.

I've always liked them.

I think the 8 Series was BMW's autobahn cruiser answer to the 928. Never a real sports car except in the "catch them in the straights" method like Corvette at the time.

In addition it was their research platform for the electronic age to the tune of 26 electronic boxes(not my count). Fortunately there is a support group for them like this one.

And yes I am a glutton for punishment, I have a Range Rover too.
