They were on display at 928 Euro 2002.

800 5450 would make it 450th '80 ROW automatic engine. 20 years in storage I quess. Viscous fan felt very tight if I remember right.

82G 05215 is 215th '86 S ROW automatic.

If that GTS says 81 S 50666, I think it would be 666th '95 automatic. That must be one mean motor.

I would have to confirm the S/N, but I think the GTS engine now resides in a Friends GTS here in the UK, He had a NEW engine fitted (which had come from the factory ) back in March. Porsche's 3rd & final(hopefully) attempt at solving excessive oil consumption. A brand new engine FOC ! Was he happy !

Big Dave is painfully correct and the requiste reduction in price for a soiled oilfiller cap would be a conservative $2500.00.
If the dip-stick is installed 90 degrees out, a further reduction of $1200.00 is mandatory.
180 degrees out and the engine is, let's face it, worthless... say I could afford it then

If Porsche is paying to drop a second replacement engine into a GTS you have to think they wish they had never sold THAT CAR ............. and to be doing WARRANTY work on an 8-10 year old car !! That is almost unbelievable ...

Not really. $20 a piece cover bolts took much more time and effort. Just needed to remove some brackets around heads like drivers side rear lifting bracket and then they slided away. Not too much room thought. If engine mounts are brand new, it must be harder.

WayneA,

If, rather, when you sell your lovely 928 32v engine to one of the list members, please let us know. We need to be able to pull their chain a little at least....behavior that will by motivated by envy, no doubt.

Your price is fair....I remember when BMW had problems in the mid-90s with their v8 engines (nikasil), requiring replacement of the short-blocks with alusil sleeved versions), that the value of these efforts including parts and labor was in the $8-10k range. I imagine there are more than a few poor bas****s out there who have had to fork something like that amount over to engines that failed outside of BMW's silent recall campaign.

Has anyone heard of a renegade 540i, 740i(L), or 840i? If so, which engines have been retroed into them? Just curious...

Best,
Tim

I'd like to see someone cram one of the V12's into a 5 series. Probably won't fit, and the early ones wouldn't produce that much more horsepower...but just to see it done would be interesting.

Flint,

I agree with you...would be neat to see a BMW 540i (6-speed) converted to a 5.0 v-12 "550i", eh?

Hey, will one of those mate up to a 928????? Now, there would be a "cost-effective" solution. Surely this question has been asked before....off to the archives.

Best,
Tim

I've seen pictures of both 5-series (E34) and 3-series (E30&E36) with those engines. The wildes one is a 316 Compact with a 850CSi driveline.. Crazy..
