What oil do you use and why?
This thread was suggested by someone who will remain nameless unless they decide to post about it (no, not Kibort).
We are going to try something here..... The ONLY posts allowed in this thread is what you use in your 928(s) and why.
ALL OTHER POSTS / COMMENTS WILL BE DELETED
In the back of our brains, we all know that pretty much every oil in the correct viscosity is fine for our street cars. However, people like to start oil threads to see what other people are using. It's no secret we gain a comfort level knowing that so-and-so also does this...so I'll do the same.
Since every oil thread turns into a debate, this simple question gets lost. The user that reached out to me wanted to see if we could simply build a list of what everyone uses and why, so here goes.....

To get this ball rolling, hopefully I follow the rules
I've used the following 15/20w-50 over the years in my 928's, in some order of usage:
Since I'm running out of VR-1 I will now be switching the "fleet" over to Lubrication Engineers 20w-50 which is not a full synthetic:

Why? That is what Todd uses in his Twin Turbo. Really no other reason.
I've used the following 15/20w-50 over the years in my 928's, in some order of usage:
- Castrol Syntec (now called Edge) - This is what we were all using in the early 90's. Some 5w-50 mixed in there too
- M1 - It was the late 90's, that is what everyone was using
- Royal Purple - Switched to this after the M1 / Castrol synthetic lawsuit over what really constituted a "synthetic" and around this time the ZDDP crap started also.
- Brad Penn - Local engine builder that spends a lot of time on the engine dyno, this is in his top 3 choices. Turned me onto it.
- Valvoline VR-1 (synthetic and non) - Indy500 promotion a few years ago I ended up with a couple cases for free

I have used the following oils, and now back to VR1.
Castro like 20W50 Dino plus zinc additive. Worked well
-
Porsche classic 20w50. Lifter tapped like crazy after long rests.
-
Valvoline VR1 racing oil 20w50 (high zinc)
This is in Ontario, summers are 80-90f. No driving below 40f.

Burning Brakes
Mobil 1 15w-50. 1200+ ZDDP
I buy two 5qt jugs twice a year when Mobil has their promo going and get a $12 rebate for each jug purchased. Brings the price down almost to the regular dino juice level. Just got two $12 rebate checks yesterday.

Reasoning:
Over the years that synthetics have been popular, I've used several in different cars along the way. The M1 demonstrated that it keeps the engine internals -really- clean when changed regularly. A previous car with 120k of M1 (since new) looked like it was still brand new inside when opened for a non-oil-relate reason. Not even the yellow varnish-like coating that conventional oils leave. No ridges, and all the original hone marks prominent in the bores. Cams looked as new, as did the roller lifters. Virtually no carbon buildup. Lots of towing in very warm conditions, plus snow duty too.
Years ago I was sure that "racing oil" was better for my performance street cars. And it was, so long as it was changed every month or two. The Ashland (Valvoline) rep shared with me that the racing versions of their oils were low on detergents and some additives that reduce corrosion. Since real race cars get the oil changed and inspected after each race event, those additives are not missed. For street cars that go months or longer between changes, racing oil is a poor choice. Street cars see only very short bursts of power, where race cars see extended sessions where film strength at temperature becomes a critical factor. That advice is now a few decades old, so may not apply to what's sold today.
Meanwhile... Our engines need an oil that has high zinc content to lubricate the faces of our flat-tappet (non-roller) camshafts when driven hard. "Racing" oils can have a higher level of zinc since they are "assumed" to be for racing use only, without catalysts. The M1 Extended Life 15W-50 has a pretty decent zinc content, certainly adequate for the street-driven 928. In my opinion.

Amsoil 20w-50 when I can get it, otherwise Amsoil 15w-50 Racing Oil. I use it because of the high zinc content, low foaming property, and resistance to thinning when hot ( and because Kibort said it'll make my engine run forever).

I use Mobil 1 15W-50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil that I purchase in 5 quart jugs at WalMart. I use it because of the ZDDP level and good opinions from a number of people on RL.

Where can I purchase Mobil 1
Going to Frenzy in September and want to buy some of this oil!!
Here in Canada this oil is crazy expensive!
When returning from SITM June 2016, I stopped at a Walmart close to Pittsburgh and no stock. Hope to get a few jugs when returning from Frenzy.
Any recommendations/suggestions?
