Default What is the value/rarity of early leather seats?

I have a pair of early leather electric seats in a medium brown color. They're in good condition, no cracks, just a little dry. They'll come back with treatment. It's an odd color of brown (I'll post up a pic shortly).

I picked them up intending to put them into my car, which has a black interior. So, I'll be making them black.

My question is: Are these worth more to the community as a whole as they are? Or are early electric leather seats so common that it's no great loss if I go ahead.

My knee jerk answer to the question, given the increase in value to nice early cars. is yes they are probably becoming more valuable. If they were a common color, black or tan they would probably be easily sold. I think the problem you might face would be finding someone needing your specific color seat if they are an uncommon color.

I'm not worried about selling them, I'm worried that I'm screwing someone who'll need them to restore a rare car if I color them black and stick them in my car.

paint away. Don't worry about what someone else might need, worry about what you want - that's what these cars are for - personal enjoyment! It's like covering the couch with plastic, to keep it nice - I never understood that sentiment.

Yeah, color bleed from my wife's jeep behind me.

Oh, believe me: I'm all about doing what I want with my car. I was just trying to be neighborly. Plus, I didn't want to be the guy in a few years where someone goes, "Remember when Shawn had those extremely rare-colored leather seats in great condition, and he slopped black all over them? What a dope!"

Anyway, I'm seeing so few leather 928 seats on eBay, I don't think I have much choice.

I have come across a philosophy out there that suggests that when you have something that might be rare, and you are planning to modify it, you should not because you are somehow holding it in trust for some other guy who might need it as original. I too do not agree with that philosophy. Especially so since the guy or group who is going to want or need it is going to expect to pay you chicken feed for it or even think you should donate it to his or their cause.
