Jim,
Just a tad north. One of the purchasing points for me was the maintanence of the PO. Wouldn't have bought it otherwise considering its mileage of 190K.

Well if we want at the average over the years, I can give a good example. I have records back to 1985.
All records totalled 30K. So that would be $1500/year for 20 years.

If we subtract all the mods (3-piece wheels, 17" cup wheels, headers/exhaust/tip, custom stereo/amp/sub, momo wheel, speedhut gauges, defi gages, WBo2, AFPR, elec Hayden fan):
We get 23K. So that would be $1150/year for 20 years

Well, I'm sure I don't have EVERY receipt to include all oil changes, tires, and batteries (Though I have some of POs, and all of mine). So lets include a 5% increase to account for the unknowns.
That brings us to over $1200/year

And there you have it.

Since Feb 04, started with a 84 928S, 60K miles
2 8" flat discs and ES100's, 225/50 and 245/45 600.00
Trans flush and new filter, tighten fuel lines 200.00
Timing belt and WP, new tensioner/roller, adjust linkage 800.00
Recharge AC 100.00
Oh, yeah, thermostat and a few hoses and one afternoon 75.00
And, for that I get to smile every morning when I see it out the window, and grin when I crank it up, it came with a great sound system that hasn't been turned on for more than a few minutes, 'cause I haven't found any better music than the engine makes while I'm driving it. What else can I say?

Default zen and the art of 928 maintenance

I really don't understand the point of this query. If we looking for low maintanace commuters, then wouldn't we be all in Hondas! I've two that are in superb shape, by my own hand and the previous POs. I've routine maintenance and upgrades-cosmetic and performance. This is my hobby.... I live in a golf community, but don't play golf....to join the somewhat exclusive club is initially $15k-25k, with yearly dues of $5k-2k respectively. Then there is green fees, equipment, lessons, tournament fees and social events....how is this different from my hobby?....my initial investment was ~$12K-17K for membership in this exclusive club, annual fees are $2-3K with addition upgrades and social events to satisfy ego, derive pleasure and explore the limits of my mechanical abilities, or define the boundaries of my stupidity....and do I include the 2001 Escort that I use as a daily commuter so as not to rack up the mileage on the Porsches? How will the result of this survey change anything? This is my hobby, my passion and to quantify it seems almost sacrilegious.

Grasshooper

....and if my wife reads this string, there be no hope for a third 928!

Hey, Doc...you forgot - you can play in THIS club regardless of the weather, too!
BTW - it is NEXT week that I may be in your area...I'll touch base.

$2.5k so far this year, brake master cylinder, brake booster, oil cooler, RMB, tires, oil and other odds and ends.

Still less than what some people spend on a set of wheels for their SUV.

I have spent $400 in repairs the past year, the majority being $180 for a dealership alignment which for the first time since the car was built [probably] got the wheels straight. I've probably spent that much in chamois, water, and Rejex~

This is on a '85 928S2, 135k miles. I've driven 4k miles in the past year. More a statement of lifestyle than car, I'll admit~

N!.

I think the point is to establish some facts, as opposed to impressions. Also, it seems as though the costs aren't that much higher than a "normal" car... at least until the mods start happening...

Lets see, owned the car for almost three months. Driven 760 miles. Repairs $11,500. DEVEK doesn't come cheap! So thats about $15 a mile not counting gas.....but everytime I drive it the per mile price goes down. I'll put it this way, just about everything was replaced or checked & I shouldn't have any major issues for quite a while....once I get the damm leaky A/C fixed

added my costs up last night. Came to just over 2k a year. This is a garage queen and a one owner car (before me). Right now it needs motor mounts. I am amazed at what these cars cost. By the way I have someone else turn the wrenches.

I can tell you that, if you don't drive the car much, the costs appear to be low for that year. Last year I drove less than 1k miles and had $0 in non-maintenance repairs.

In the 7 years of custodian duty, the total cost of ownership, including insurance and fuel but not depreciation, works out to a little less than a dollar a mile for me.

But I do have a maintenance list to address that will blow that number for a while. TB/WP and new underhood rubber will eat $1k sometime between now and next spring. My used-to-be-sticky Mich Pilots will get replaced due to age before they are worn out. Springs are sagging (again!) and probebly deserve replacement, and at 65k miles the shocks will get replaced too. Another $1k. I have the motor mounts on the shelf, and need to replace the oil sump gasket even though it doesn't leak, rebuild the oil pressure sender because it does, and replace the PS hoses because they do sometimes. That's a weekend and another $1k by the time all is done and cleaned up.

I've driven the car 5k miles in the last two years, mostly becuase it's at home and I'm not. This is probably the last year that will happen, so maybe I'll get some miles next year to distribute these costs out over.

---------------

I think the question was about "repair" costs, right? I replaced a pair of CV joint boots about a year ago, a couple hours and about $100 total cost IIRC. A temp switch in that period too, however much that was plus a couple hours to drive down to visit Jim and Mark. I still have the RF inner fender liner section on the shelf to replace the one that's cracked, about $70 with the foam seals. I think that's it for "repairs", less than $250 total and less than a day under the car.

Dr Bob you know I love you .....it takes a special understanding to differentiate repairs from maintenance !! Repairs is fixing what BROKE. Maintenance being replacing what you KNOW is wearing out BEFORE it breaks or wears out . Very good call ! Airplane pilots understand that concept very well , good race mechanics and Dr Bob !

I won't even admit to what I've spent since I've owned the car, but ask Susan at Devek and watch her grin!! And I am not done yet. But as differentiated above, much has been maintenance, since the car is at 150,000 miles and the PO knew it was time to move on before it all came down on him. The original hoses lasted until 140,000 if you can believe that. In fact, this is the most impressively constructed P car I've yet owned. No oil burned, or maybe a half a quart in 3000 miles, now that all the seals are done, no leaks. Time for a transmission fix, as 3rd-4th shift slips abit. And a new steering rack is due. But when it is all done, it should go another 100,000 and still be a fantastic GT. A lot of the work done is also WYAIT so that is maitenance also and gives me piece of mind at speed in the boonies. Finally, on the aggenda is a roll bar, as a friend was lost last weekend in a roll over of a new Mercedes. That is not a question of cost, because the benefit is exponentially beyond the original cost.
Yes, this car was a $60k to $80k GT when new and with luck will remain at the top of that catagory for a lot less for years to come. I have only one other curiosity and that is the Ferrari 456 which I have yet to drive....but at plus $200,000, it may be awhile.

So far, about $5k average p.a. on enhancements. On repairs, consumptibles (tyres, oil etc) and service, I spend maybe average of 200 dollars p.a. on each 928.
