1985 32V CAM CHAIN TENSIONER CHECK VALVE
Anyone know if you can replace this check valve with a hollow banjo bolt that holds the oil line to tensioner like 1986 and later model cars have, 1985 and 86 have same tensioner but no check valve on 86

I'm having a tough time imagining why you would even be questioning this.....put it back the way it was....there is zero downside.

How do the plastic shoes look?
There were issues with the 85/86 tensioners too, causing Tappet noise (low oil pressure).
I always replace them w/ the improved S4 design, at least you can replace the shoes also.
edit: does yours have the disc or the cup at the top of the spring (it's inside the tube), will need to tap in on the bench for it to fall out, early ones had a disc, then were updated to the cup.
IIRC there was a tech bulletin on it.
can be seen on the top of the sping

Hi Randy, what we really need is a supply of the Oil feed tubes for the S4 tensioners to fit onto an S3 head.
Porsche did make them at one time and they were fitted to later model 86.5's, however they are NLA
