1990 Upper Ball Joints?????
Hey all whats happenin...so I need to replace my upper ball joints for excessive play. Question is...Does Rennbays kit apply to MY 1990 also?
Or am I forced to pay $400+ for rebuild ones?
Thoughts are appreciated...

The rebuild kits only apply to early (78-85) upper ball joints and will not work on the S4 and up joints AFAIK. If you think $400 for a rebuilt arm is high wait till you price new from Porsche.

Trust me, when I say this:
If you have a 1990 928 with worn out ball joints (150,000 miles, minimum?) the cost of this repair isn't even going to register in your memory, by the time you are done with this car.
This cost, percentage wise, will end up about the same as dropping a taco on the ground at Del Taco. A veritable "freebie" in terms of 928 costs!
BTW.....I find the thought of negotiating with a used car dealer on a 26 year old car, after you have purchased it, extremely interesting.
Be sure and tell us this story.

Every used car in Wisconsin and most (if not all) states require a safety inspection form be filled out and displayed before the car is offered for sale.
This form must be displayed at all times in the car until sold.

OK got you...California despite all their other regulations has absolutely no "safety inspection" and it shows Texas does a wiper and glass, brake check, lights, and horn but have not seen them lift a car on the rack for a detailed inspection of suspension.

If he was complaining about a pan gasket leak I would agree going back to the dealership would be silly. A worn ball joint? In the state of Wisconsin selling a used car (no matter how old) with such a component worn or failing is illegal.

That's actually a great thing!
So what is tolerable.....everything is always worn some....and I've never seen an upper ball joint on a 928 actually fail.

I suspect that a thorough MOT/TUV-style biannual inspection program would scrub a huge number of unsafe cars off our roads. Would increase new car sales, which means more and higher sales and use tax receipts to the states. Of course, it would unfairly target those who are forced to drive older cars (as we are...), so let's all just ignore worn suspension because even inspecting it is de facto discrimination.
