I'm not trying to kill the sale I just think the person trying to sell needs to know that the buyer will spend more on catching up on deferred maintenance than the car should sell for.

No disrespect intended, but a little irreverence intended. Estate sales, where the item has no history, and is sold without any kind of backing do not generally bring top dollar. I think there's a medium between 12 and 17 that will get it done.

Which brings me to another off-topic blast from docs past. There was an auction of old, crusty, and mostly decrepit aircraft parts way over in Tyler about 10 years ago. I vaguely knew the gentleman who died and what he left so I mosied over on the Sat and had a look around. There were about 30 people there, and the cheap lots went early, but by the time the good stuff was on the block we were down to a core of 16 or so. There was a vintage propeller being offered, and started at $1000, we went on up and after a while it was down to two of us. I just kept popping my hand up while grinning at the other bidder. He dropped out at $2800 and I got it. Next thing up was a long block Continental engine. It started at $1600 and I went up to $4300 and got that. About a year later, I sold the prop on barnstormers.com for $8000 plus shipping. I sold the engine for $11,000 with all logs. That - my friends, is the way estate sales go.

He already knows that and he has the PPI written by Sean. We gave him the rough numbers on all the major maintenance issues.

He has been absolutely bombarded with interest so he aims high. I am with Jarrod - if you want a totally unmolested 40k one owner car for reasonable money then this is it. I actually believe I will be kicking myself in 5 years for not buying it.

You don't ask you don't get.

Paint and interior are two areas that can only be original once, no amount of money can ever bring back that originality.... Mechanical's can be changed out and refurbished indefinitely.

If this were a GTS with suspected block damage, that would be an issue or a GT that needing a transmission.

Nothing this car will need is rare or hard to find, even if it needed an entire drive-train.

Engine out service? Big deal.......

Am I saying it's worth $17k? I have no idea, but I wouldn't finch at anyone willing to spend that. What would it be worth if mechanically perfect? Start there and rewind.... I don't think $17k is all that far off.

Nor do I Eric, I think it's a pretty good asking price. The miles on it are only going to go up once it's running.

We will see, what we will see. Sadly, unlike real property, we will prolly never know the actual selling price. But I'll stake my guess on well under $17k. When I can get a decent early 996 for the same/less money, the 928 market starts to get pretty rarefied.

Wish I could find a car like that here in Thailand for $17k. Paid more for my rough '80.

I'll be happy to help you ship this into Thailand. I have people who can get it in there no problem. Now, your costs to the kingdom might make it unpopular, but the price of the car, is the price of the car. I would expect duties and fees into Thailand on this car would be well over $20k USD.

Can't bring in old cars legal anymore except for returning students etc (but some have managed to do it due to high level contacts, the law is not black & white here). If you could tax would be more than 300% on a value customs decide. And if somebody in customs like the car you will never see it again.
We now having a crackdown on cars that came in to Thailand in illegal ways usually cut in 2 and in parts and put together here. Many of those cars were registered on a "book and plate" from another car with VIN changed.

Which makes sense since many of those were stolen cars anyway....

Not always because it's to avoid our crazy taxes.
Can be very big profit when you buy a car for say $50K and sell it for $300K.
It's a grey area that have been practiced and accepted for many years. Most Thai would buy a car like this without blinking especially if they save a few $$$.

Bump

Interested in some sort of update myself. I've seen the car in person as well, albeit behind the wrought iron gate at the shop.

Just wanted to give an update on this car. It was delivered to me today for a belt/pump job and to get it running. With any luck all it needs to get it driving is this and some fresh gas. So far it appears that the belt and pump are original, gears are all in perfect shape.

Will update as I get in to it.
