Default 928 Option Codes (Deciphering)

All -

My first newbie research question for you. Is there a resource where the option codes are "explained"...some are pretty obvious:

M454 - Automatic speed control

but some are not:

M490 - Sound system

So what does that entail? Different head unit? Additional speakers or amplifiers? Even more confusing when there is also:

M494 - Additional amplifier

I hope this makes sense? On the earlier cars there seem to be more options that have less specification:

M197 - Stronger battery (how much 'stronger')?

I think I am wanting to be able to look for correct options as I start to research particular cars - e.g. if it has sport seats wanting to make sure the sport seats are still there (or the 'additional amplifier').

Thanks for the advice!

Option are model year and sometimes market specific. For example sometimes radios were different for different markets even thhough M code was same. It all depends on what car is.

The factory documentation is a little hit n miss RE: radio documentation- there's one service info tech book that describes M494 briefly but I can't find it right now- basically something like 4 channels, X watts/channel, IIRC. FWIW, the literature does list more than 60 different radios offered in a 928- given that there were ~40 different markets worldwide during production, there are probably many more that were 'factory'. Here's the list I have so far:

Good point about the option codes not being very descriptive. I think if you search you may come across a thread where an individual option is discussed in more detail. But I agree. It would be nice if there was one document that includes not just the codes and their names, but a brief description of what they are when not otherwise obvious. Maybe it exists? Not sure. Rob however probably has the most information on these types of things.

Thanks all (so far)...maybe I can contribute by working on this. It would be really nice to have a site for new folks (me and those coming behind me) that would have pics embedded as well - for things like seats (comfort vs. sport), the radios, etc.

I'll see what I can come up with but may need some assistance along the way.

The 928 Owners Club has a list on the 928 Owner's Club website, here.

Compiled from various sources but not reviewed by RL experts. I am the database volunteer and happy to make corrections, host expanded descriptions, add fields for more info, pictures, etc . Perhaps we can figure out a way to make a place for ongoing comments for each item as well. PM me for more info.
