Default Vinyl Wrap vs Plastidip

With all this talk about vynil wraps, has anyone "dipped" their car or wheels?

One of the pros about the Plastidip is that you can touch it up. Any other pros and cons of either?

Right now I think you can only get a matte finish with dip. Vinyl gets closer to a clear coat finish.

They have a glossy dip top coat. I dipped my wheels...first the black (which is basically matte) and then a gloss coat. Now, you have to get the base coat nice and smooth to make the gloss coat really work, and I didn't do a great job with that, so my wheels are sort of satin. But I do like the look, and it was relatively cheap and easy to do.

Looks good. How has it held up since you did it?

My car is a half-assed red respray. I'm sure it was in an accident at some point, since one quarter was originally red and the rest of the car was originally black. I want to go red with white stripes. I was originally thinking about wrapping, but I like the 'buff' texture of the plasti-dip.

It's held up very well, considering I have beat the s#!t out of it. I put it on as I noted in my thread only as a protective coating prior to (sometime) properly refinishing the car (mechanicals first- still working on those). Get a scratch or a scuff, a little xylene on a rag takes care of that. Otherwise I just ignore it. And it cures much harder than you think it would. But it will still peel, which is what I will eventually want. I'm out of town right now but I'll try to post a pic of an "accidental" peel when I get home.

REVIVAL!!!

I have looked into this again recently, after spending some time on dipyourcar.

they have consumer grade, pro grade, and then an expert grade. I found a shop near me and contacted them. He sent me some good videos, pics, and gave me some good info.

Estimate to do a 928 in the gloss style that is similar to factory paint is just shy of $2k. No sure how much prep is included, but I am guessing it is just basic prep and masking. I was most interested in it covering the current imperfections with very little prep. I will be setting up an appointment to have him look at my white 82 in the next couple weeks to get more info. He did say it will last 5 years +/- with proper care....I’m already trying to prep the wife to let me use the tax refund this coming year, but that’s a long shot...

Dipped the 991 wheels in silver. Decided to go back to the original graphite color and just peeled off the plastic dip. Can even spray the wheels while on the car. Neat stuff. T
