Default OB trivia...What belongs here?

Two nice holes in my ashtray cover ('78). Was someone trying to vent the tray or did the factory install something?
Also, is the medallion someone's add on or did it come from Porsche?

Not sure about the holes, but the gold medallion/coin to my knowledge was given to the original owners of '78's by the dealer from which the car was purchased. Oftentimes the dealers would just keep the coins. Since the customers never knew to ask for them, most never received them.

I have a friend who purchased a '78 new, and he had to go back to the dealer to ask for the coin, which they reluctantly gave to him. His is not mounted anywhere on the car, so I'm not sure if that's something the dealer or the owner would have done.

Wow; never knew that. Of course all of us OB guys are going to want one now, but Alex is going to jump in and buy them all up, cornering the market and driving up prices on these coins

Mine for $1199. Someone tell me about the holes. Van, with all those '78's you must know ash trays.

Default #225...

No holes in the ashtray, but has Porsche badge (which I've seen before on other 928's, but have no idea if factory).

No medallion (never seen one before).

Interesting story about the medallion.

Brian.

If it had been done by Porsche at the factory it would NOT have been off center and crooked......

Jim Chambers,

Look at Brian's ashtray cover, and not how the front face sits higher than the one in your car. I'm still believing that there's a cover piece that fits over the part you have. It may not be available as a separate part, but definitely more than what you have now. Perhaps a call to Mark/Tom will net you one before Alex & Brian can... Get all you can before the hoarders get there!

Hello Jeff. Indeed one and the same. Last owned 914 was a one owner '70 found in Weed, CA and sold in 2010 here in Bend. Then I briefly owned a '90 928GT sold to buy a 912 project which took 3.5 years to complete. Sold it and now have another 928. At my age I thought it was time to quit but couldn't do it. Do you have a 928 now?

This is what I was thinking also, something just looks wrong about the texture and height. I have two 78 ashtrays out in the lodge...I'm going out to take a look.

New flash at 11...

No holes, looking at the underside of the lid.

Part number.

Underside of lid, again.

Both ashtrays have similar external texture. And the lids are one solid piece of plastic, no cover.

Kind of wondered if Jim's car has a leather dash and console...and maybe there was a leather cover on the lid to match?

Sorry about the poor quality of photos, best I can do with this tablet.

Brian.

Thank you Brian. My car does not have leather dash. The shift boot is leather as well as the area surrounding the shift lever. I will check my part # and compare with yours.
Is that # on the lid or somewhere on the tray?

'78 would not have leather dash, came in '79. Holes and the badge AFAIK are not original to any '78 cars, I've never seen it in any '78 cars or in old literature far as I can tell. My '78's lid have a 'grain' similar to Brian's. Your smooth one may be a later edition.

Indeed. I picked up a nice 81 a couple years ago. It will be my DD soon. 36K miles. Nice to connect with you again. A few 914 owners I know also own 928s.
